    • 101 - Plans/construction/alterations not in accordance with the Regulation [s. 3; s. 4]
      • Observation: Observed the flooring in the walk-in cooler was severely damaged, as well as food products were stored on particle-board shelving. Public Health significance - Particle board is not easily cleanable, and can harbour disease-causing organisms that can lead to contamination of food products and/or foodborne illness. Floors that are not easily cleanable can lead to food and/or water being readily available for pests.
      • Corrective Action: All surfaces, including but not limited to, floors and storage areas, must be constructed from materials that are suitable for their intended purpose, durable, easily cleanable (i.e., smooth and impervious to moisture), and free from any noxious or toxic substances.
    • 209 - Repeat Food not protected from contamination [s. 12(a)]
      • Observation: Observed some beverage containers were stored on the ground, as well as on-top of a multi-catch mouse trap. Also observed some cleaning brushes were stored alongside straws and lids for slurpee cups. Public Health significance - Contamination of food from contact with objects, people, pests or chemicals can cause serious illness and is more likely to occur when food/beverage products are stored on the ground.
      • Corrective Action: Ensure that all food products, including beverage containers, are stored at least 15 cm (6 inches) off the ground. All packaging and utensils (e.g., straws and lids) that may come into contact with food must be stored in a sanitary condition, and protected against contamination.
    • 304 - Repeat Premises not free of pests [s. 26(a)]
      • Observation: Evidence of mice; Observed droppings throughout the facility (e.g., in cupboards and in box containing coffee cup sleeves), chew marks on some packaging, and a packet of relish had been chewed through and consumed by a mouse. Operator has a contract with a professional pest control company. Public Health Significance - Rodents and other pests may cross contaminate foods and surfaces or contaminate human food with feces and urine, carry parasites and other diseases.
      • Corrective Action: Remove any pest attractants such as food and water, eliminate access to the building and routes they use inside. Trap and remove the pests. Clean and sanitize area where droppings are located and monitor situation. Food products and packaging within the cupboard were disposed by the Operator during the inspection. All food products or packaging (e.g., straws and coffee cup sleeves) that may have come into contact with mice, mice droppings, or their urine need to be disposed off (or their packaging cleaned and sanitized if the material is non-porous and easily cleanable).
    • 305 - Repeat Conditions observed that may allow entrance/harbouring/breeding of pests [s. 26(b),(c)]
      • Observation: Observed holes in the wall where the slurpee machine used to be located, as well as a significant amount of garbage/items stored upstairs.
      • Corrective Action: The holes in the wall where the slurpee machines used to be located need to be sealed. All garbage and items not required for your operations needs to be moved out of the store as soon as possible to prevent harbourage of pests.

    • 102 - Operation of an unapproved food premises [s. 6(1)]
      • Observation: During a routine inspection, discovered that Canco Petroleum had bought out the previous owner Bruce Kidd (Kidd Services Ltd.), and now owns and operates this registered company. Health Approval, and/or Permits to Operate, are not transferrable. As the previous owner Bruce Kidd is no longer involved in the corporation it is consider a change in ownership, and therefore, Canco #172 is currently operating without Health Approval. Public Health significance - Facilities are approved when they are adequately equipped to accommodate and facilitate safe food preparation. Unapproved facilities may not have the sanitary or food preparation equipment and processes in place to safely produce food products for human consumption.
      • Corrective Action: Provide an Application package for Health Approval through Northern Health. Additional information was provided via email.
    • 209 - Food not protected from contamination [s. 12(a)]
      • Observation: Observed some beverage containers were stored on the ground. Also observed some food products were stored next to motor oil. Public Health significance - Contamination of food from contact with objects, people, pests or chemicals can cause serious illness and is more likely to occur when food/beverage products are stored on the ground.

      • Observation: Evidence of mice; A live mouse was observed during the inspection near the back storage area, as well as droppings throughout the facility (e.g., in cupboards). Public Health Significance - Rodents and other pests may cross contaminate foods and surfaces or contaminate human food with feces and urine, carry parasites and other diseases.
      • Corrective Action: All areas where mice droppings or urine are found near food or food packaging need to be cleaned and sanitized immediately; the correct method can be found under prevention at Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) (bccdc.ca). All food products that may have come into contact with mice, mice droppings, or their urine need to be disposed off (or their packaging cleaned and sanitized if the material is non-porous and easily cleanable). Your three most recent pest control reports from Orkin also need to be forwarded to me for review.
    • 305 - Conditions observed that may allow entrance/harbouring/breeding of pests [s. 26(b),(c)]
      • Observation: Observed a significant gap in the bay door leading into the storage area, as well as holes in the wall where the slurpee machine used to be located. Also observed a significant amount of garabage/items within the facility that aren't required for operations that could harbour mice.
      • Corrective Action: Back bay door needs to be sealed properly to prevent entrance of mice as soon as possible. Furthermore, the holes in the wall where the slurpee machines used to be located need to be sealed, and all garbage and items not required for your operations needs to be moved out of the store as soon as possible.
