12 infractions
- 03. Are facility-specific written procedures established to adequately describe safe and sanitary practices?
- (1) The written procedures templates had been printed by the operator but had not been fully completed. Require the following: (a) Written Procedure for Cleansing Skin (for manicures, pedicures, waxing, lash tinting and lash extensions)(b) Written Procedure for Accidental Skin Cuts or Punctures (c) Written Procedure for Handwashing and Equipment Reprocessing Sink Decontamination
- 10. Is cleansing and antisepsis of skin and mucous membrane performed in accordance to written procedures and are suitable products being used?
- (1) There was no cleanser available for cleaning the skin prior to the waxing service. The operator was using 70% alcohol which is an antiseptic. * For eyelashes, the operator was using Lashpure Eyelash & Eyelid Cleanser.* For manicures, the clients have access to a hand wash sink in the service area.* For pedicures, feet are washed in the foot basin.
- 14. Is single-use or uncleanable equipment being used as intended (Non-Critical)?
- (1) PREempt CS20 in a spray bottle was being used on the reusable nail files. Instead of PREempt CS20, an antiseptic product such as 70% alcohol (which the operator had on site) can be used as it evaporates easily (keeping the risk of chemical burns low). * A disinfectant must not be used for this process because:(a) uncleanable equipment cannot be disinfected,(b) using a disinfectant with a DIN on uncleanable equipment is off label use, which is in contravention of the Standards,(c) rinsing of disinfectant on a porous equipment cannot be guaranteed and may pose increased risk of chemical burns.
- 15. Is reusable equipment handled and stored properly (Critical)?
- (1) The waxing tweezers in the drawer were not kept in a clean space. The drawer was cluttered with miscellaneous items and the tweezers were stored on top of everything else.
- 20. Is reusable equipment disinfected properly?
- (1) PREempt CS20 was being used for the pedicure basins. The contact time is too long (20 minutes) for a pedicure basin. An intermediate-level disinfectant (with a shorter contact time) is recommended.(2) Operator indicated nail drill bits are soaked in alcohol. Manicure drill bits are semi-critical equipment. Please use a proper disinfectant on the drill bits.* PREempt CS20 (a high level disinfectant) was available on site and was being used for other tools.* The operator had started the High Level Disinfectant Log for this disinfectant.* Proper test strip were available at the time of inspection: AHP7 test strips used.
- 24. Are waste sharps disposed of properly?
- (1) The sharps waste container was an empty plastic bottle/jug. It did not have a secure lid and it was not properly labeled to indicate that it was a sharps container. It was located on the floor next to the service area sink where it could easily be knocked over. The operator labeled the jug with a sharpie at the time of inspection.
- 26. Are cosmetic products appropriate for their intended use and being handled properly?
- (1) CDI - Some containers were not properly labeled to indicate what they contained. The operator labeled items with a black sharpie marker during the inspection. Ensure all containers are properly labeled.
- 28. Is the facility properly constructed and maintained to allow for the safe and sanitary provision of personal services (Critical)?
- (1) There was no hot water supplied to the washroom hand sink.* The hand sink in the front area was supplied with hot & cold potable running water.
- 29. Is the facility properly constructed and maintained to allow for the safe and sanitary provision of personal services (Non-Critical)?
- (1) The washroom toilet tank lid had been removed. The operator explained the tank was not working properly. It was not filling, and the plumber had already been called to fix the issue.* Floor, walls and ceilings were in good repair.* Lighting was satisfactory* Adequate storage was available for equipment and supplies.* Work surfaces were smooth, non-porous and easily cleanable.
- 30. Is the reprocessing area of a personal service facility that uses reusable equipment properly designed, managed and maintained to ensure the safety of clients?
- (1) The sink in the front service area was being used for handwashing (staff and clients) and reprocessing of tools. There is inadequate counter space for the washing, drying and disinfection of tools. * There was an extra sink in the waxing room. However, it was not being used for handwashing or tool reprocessing. Recommend using this sink for equipment reprocessing as it is out of the way of clients and is in a low traffic area. Add a table or shelf for adequate counter space for the cleaning, drying and disinfection steps required.
- 32. Are general nuisance conditions, other than those noted in other violations, being prevented at this personal services facility (Critical)?
- (1) A general surface disinfectant was not readily available. PREempt CS20 was being used as a general surface disinfectant. This is not as per the manufacturer's instructions. The contact time of 20 minutes cannot be achieved. Ensure a proper surface disinfectant is being used and readily available.
- 33. Are general nuisance conditions, other than those noted in other violations, being prevented at this personal services facility (Non-Critical)?
- (1) The plastic container used for the PREempt CS20 solution was not made of a sturdy material. It appeared to be a plastic soup container used for takeout in food facilities. Ensure a proper (labelled) container is used for the disinfectant.(2) Personal items (coats) were stacked on a chair in the waxing room between the workspace and the hand sink. Ensure all personal items are kept out of the service room.
