      • **Updated March 18th, 2026: Homemade flour was still being used.Flour must be RTE when purchased and cannot be cooked onsite to make it RTE**Homemade playdough with regular flour is used. Please discard them and make playdough with other safer alternatives. Information regarding the safe playdough usage: In childcare facilities, safety is crucial, making alternatives to raw flour-based recipes important. Cornstarch-based playdough is a safer option, as cornstarch undergoes processing that reduces microbial risks, unlike corn flour, which carries similar safety concerns to raw flour. Additionally, cornstarch is often treated with small amounts of sulphur dioxide as a preservative, further enhancing its safety.Ready-to-eat (RTE) flour, which is thermal-treated to eliminate harmful bacteria, is another safe alternative for use in playdough or consumption. Products like Ardent Mill's SafeGuard flour and Honeyville's TempSure flour are processed for safety but are typically more expensive and harder to find in small quantities. Childcare facilities should source RTE flour from reputable suppliers that meet Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regulations and ensure the product is labeled "Heat Treated" for safety.
