- 201 - Critical Food contaminated or unfit for human consumption [s. 13]
- Observation: Facility was using community water currently under a boil water notice to prepare ice, as well as serve water to customers. The facility is using a filter system, however the filter has not been approved by Northern Health to be used during a boil water notice. (Public Health Significance) - Water consumed under a boil water notice could cause harm and could result in waterborne illnesses.
- Corrective Action: Do not use the ice machine with community water until the boil water notice has been lifted. Alternatively, use an alternative source (an approved source not currently under a notice) of water for this machine. The community water may be used IF the water is brought to a rolling boil for a minimum of one minute and cooled prior to use. Serve bottled water until the boil water notice has been lifted. Use bagged ice as an alternative to the ice machine. After boil water notice has been lifted clean and sanitize the ice machine according to the manufacturer's instructions before reusing it. Coffee and other hot beverages are still allowed to be sold because they reach temperatures hot enough (74°C/ 165°F for a minimum 15 seconds, verified by a probe thermometer) to kill pathogenic organisms.
- 209 - Food not protected from contamination [s. 12(a)]
- Observation: (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION) Foods were left uncovered and open to contamination. Multiple items including lettuce in the fridge, fried onion topping, and seed toppings on the prep tables were left open to contamination at time of inspection. (Public Health Significance) - Contamination of food from contact with objects, people, pests or chemicals can cause serious illness.
- Corrective Action: Cover or otherwise protect all foods from airborne contaminants, drips from raw foods, and contact with objects and staff. Operator added lids at time of inspection.
- 305 - Conditions observed that may allow entrance/harbouring/breeding of pests [s. 26(b),(c)]
- Observation: (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION) Back door was propped open during inspection. (Public Health Significance) Leaving the back door or any door open allows for pests, such as mice, to enter the facility and hide within the walls. Mice and other pests carry diseases that can cause serious illness.
- Corrective Action: Keep the back door closed at all times. Operator closed the door at time of inspection.
- 306 - Food premises not maintained in a sanitary condition [s. 17(1)]
- Observation: Chest freezer in the extension (onion ring freezer) requires a defrost and a deep cleaning. (Public Health Significance) Contamination of food from contact with objects, people, pests, or chemicals can cause serious illness. Maintaining unsanitary conditions allows for the contamination of food and can cause serious illness.
- Corrective Action: Defrost and deep clean the freezer.
- 312 - Items not required for food premises operation being stored on the premises [s. 18]
- Observation: Used oil pails and oil soiled boxes stored outside of the kitchen next to the back door. (Public Health Significance) Items such as oil can attract pests into a facility as a food source and pests carry diseases that can cause serious illnesses. Also having excess items present on a facility does not allow for good cleaning and sanitizing, which could also attract pests.
- Corrective Action: Remove the used oil and oil soiled boxes from the facility. Do not keep anything that is not required for operation present at the facility.
