- Reusable instruments are stored, handled, and maintained in good repair and sanitary condition (O.Reg. 136/18; Sec. 10(1)(a)) & Sec.10 (1)(b i-ii)).
- Store instruments in a manner that protects them from contamination.
- Ensure all reusable equipment is cleaned and disinfected or sterilized as often as necessary to prevent disease transmission (O.Reg. 136/18; Sec.10(4)).
- Ensure all equipment designated as single-use or made of material that does not withstand cleaning and disinfection or sterilization is discarded immediately after use. (O.Reg. 136/18 (10)(5).
- Do not clean and disinfect or sterilize single-use/disposable equipment.
- Immediately discard single use items after use into a waste receptacle.
- The operator shall ensure all sharps are single-use only and disposed of safely in a sharps container. (O.Reg. 136/18 (10)(6-8).
- Ensure all sharps containers are compliant with the standards of the Canadian Standards Association.
- Dispose of all sharps as per the requirements of the Environmental Protection Act, its regulations, and any other applicable law of Ontario.
- Ensure sharps are not disposed of in the municipal garbage. Sharps and sharps containers must be discarded by a licensed waste disposal company.
- Provide a sharps container that is puncture and leak resistant with a fill line designed for the safe disposal of sharps
- Records related to accidental exposures to blood and body fluids must be kept by every operator of a personal service setting.
- Ensure records include: 1. The date of the accidental exposures to blood or body fluids. 2. The service being provided when the exposure occurred. 3. The part of the body that was exposed to blood or body fluids. 4. The name and contact information of the person providing the procedure when the exposure occurred. 5. The action taken by the person providing the procedure when the exposure occurred. 6. Then name and contact information of the person who was exposed to blood or body fluids.
