- 17. Is the facility and equipment being maintained in a suitable manner (Critical)?
- A bleach spray bottle was stored on the counter near the handwashing sink, out of reach of children. The bottle was found to be empty, and a disinfectant solution was prepared by the operator at the time of inspection. Chlorine test strips have been acquired to assist with monitoring solution strength; however, the test strip packaging was unopened - indicating they had not been used. Please ensure that an appropriate disinfectant is always available when the facility is in operation.

- 17. Is the facility and equipment being maintained in a suitable manner (Critical)?
- A bleach spray bottle was stored on the counter near the handwashing sink, out of reach of children. The operator reported that the disinfecting solution is mixed fresh each day of operation. When tested during the inspection, the solution did not contain active sanitizer. Staff had followed a mixing guide from Alberta Health Services; however, they did not have test strips to verify concentration. Further assessment suggested that the bleach product used may be a lower-concentration laundry formulation, requiring a different mixing ratio to achieve 100 ppm in the spray bottle. The solution strength was corrected during the inspection, and information regarding ordering chlorine test strips will be provided.Action Required: Purchase chlorine test strips to assist with monitoring solution strength.
- 32. Are general nuisance conditions, other than those noted in other violations, being prevented at this child care facility (Non-Critical)?
- The weatherstripping on the fire exit door requires updating; a noticeable draft and visible light were present around the bottom of the door. Staff have already requested maintenance to complete this repair and will provide a photograph once it is finished.

- 18. Is the facility and equipment being maintained in a suitable manner (Non-Critical)?
- Inappropriate sanitizer is being used at this facility. During the January 23 reinspection, the Public Health Inspector (PHI) was informed by staff that they were using Microban 24 Hour Citrus (DIN 02490730) as the surface sanitizer. Microban is a QUAT based product with a DIN. However, the QUAT concentration is too high (>400 ppm) to be used as a surface disinfectant for tables or toys. For QUAT products used in institutional facilities, the concentration must be 200 ppm. The facility has been asked to find a more appropriate sanitizer. This violation can only be corrected once confirmation has been received of an appropriate sanitizer solution.

- 18. Is the facility and equipment being maintained in a suitable manner (Non-Critical)?
- Inappropriate sanitizer is being used at this facility. The operator stated that they facility was using Thieves Household Cleaner - Essential Oil Infused & Ultra-Concentrated. Inspector took pictures of this cleaner. A spray bottle labeled "Toy Spray", located in a basket by the handwashing sink also contained the same cleaner described above. Operator stated they did use bleach & water solution during COVID, however, have since then switched back to using Thieves Household cleaner. Please note that this product is not approved as a disinfectant and has no DIN or NPN number. The facility may use this product for any cleaning but must acquire an appropriate disinfectant for a commercial childcare facility. **Refer Appendix F - Cleaning & Disinfecting Surfaces, Equipment & Toys in the Health & Safety Guide of Childcare Facilities for Operators attached to this email for approved sanitizers that can be used.
