    • 13. Are properly operating hand washing sink(s) accessible to food handlers, located in suitable areas, and stocked with appropriate hand washing supplies?
      • -This kitchen only has 2 compartment dishwashing sinks that had a sign that stated "no handwashing". No separate handwashing sink was present.Kitchen is used for cooking/baking programs for LTC residents. PHI was informed that staff and residents use the washroom sink or the staff would grab bowl of water from the washroom hand sink and give it to residents to wash their hands. However, this bowl method will not work- we need running warm water for proper handwashing. The requirements for sinks and hand washing basins state that for food handling of high and low risk foods, a 2 compartment sink and separate hand washing basin are required. Hand washing basins in customer or staff washrooms or janitorial sink are NOT acceptable for the purpose of meeting these requirements. This issue had been brought to the facilities attention previously. Upon consultation with staff member the following was determined to be acceptable: Temporary solution: As most utensils and equipment are washed in the dishwasher, one compartment of the 2 compartment sink can be used as a handwash sink during food preparation. When it is necessary for using the sink to wash dishes (i.e. when utensils/equipment are too large to fit into dishwasher) the sink area must be decontaminated using an appropriate sanitizer solution before the sink is used for washing dishes. Permanent solution: Install a hand sink to meet the requirements for sinks and handwashing basins. This should be included in the plan the next time the kitchen is under renovation. -Staff was provided with 2 options short term and permanent to meet the handwashing sink requirement.
