Inspection summary

Good Thief has been inspected 6 times by Vancouver Coastal Health since May 17, 2024. The most recent inspection, on March 18, 2026, found no infractions.

3 of 6 inspections on record found no infractions at all. In the past 12 months there were 2 inspections with 3 infractions recorded. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Protecting food from contamination, Cleaning and sanitizing and Handwashing and staff hygiene.

The number of infractions per inspection has stayed roughly the same over time.

What these findings mean

Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.

  • Protecting food from contaminationHigher risk

This covers how food is stored, prepared and displayed: raw meat kept away from ready-to-eat food, food covered and stored off the floor, and nothing dripping or splashing into it. Cross-contamination from raw to cooked food is a direct route for salmonella and E. coli.

Recorded once on March 10, 2026. For example: Food is handled in a sanitary manner and is not subject to contamination.

  • Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk

Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.

Recorded once on February 5, 2025. For example: All equipment, food contact surfaces, utensils, dishes & glasses used on the premises are washed and sanitized in a manner that removes contamination.

  • Handwashing and staff hygieneHigher risk

Hands are the main way germs like norovirus move from people to food. Inspectors look for stocked, accessible handwashing sinks, staff washing hands when required, hair restraints, and sick employees being kept away from food. Gaps here can spread illness quickly.

Recorded once on February 5, 2025. For example: Each employee demonstrates good personal hygiene and washes their hands as often as necessary to prevent the contamination of food.

  • Permits, records and postingLower risk

Operating permits, required signage, written procedures and logs. These findings are administrative: the documentation was missing or out of date at the time of inspection.

Recorded 5 times across 3 separate inspections, most recently on March 10, 2026. For example: The Permit to Operate a food service establishment is valid and is posted in a conspicuous location.

We had a great experience overall. The only odd thing that happened was at the beginning when we put our name down on the waitlist. We were quoted roughly a 20 minute wait, but after about 40 minutes I noticed there were empty seats available. I went back in and asked another staff member, and we were seated right away. I never received a text or any update, so it was likely either a staff oversight or an issue with the waitlist application. The service was excellent! our server was kind, attentive, and regularly checked in on us throughout the meal without being intrusive. As for the food, we tried enough dishes to get a good sense of the menu, and I'd rate it a solid 4.5/5. A couple of dishes were pleasantly surprising and packed with flavor. They were quite rich, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but more of a treat we'd enjoy once in a while rather than crave regularly. The standout for us was definitely the potatoes. I believe they were prepared in three different ways, and each one was fantastic. The crab noodles are also a must try as the flavors were excellent. My only small complaint is that the portion felt a little small considering it was described as a shareable plate and given the price point. Other than that, everything was very good, and we'd happily return.

Tasty cocktails paired with some really good food. Their signature cocktails are creative and bring in subtle Southeast Asian influences. The Pho Dac Biet was especially interesting, it’s basically a liquid pho in cocktail form, with warm spices that actually reminded me of the real thing. The food was solid overall. The frog legs were crispy and a standout dish, while the bone marrow was rich, aromatic, and went really well with the creamy sauce. The duck was just okay though. The smoky flavor was a bit overpowering and seemed to be trying to make up for the meat itself, which was fairly bland. Overall, I had a good time. The food and drinks were enjoyable, but it is definitely on the pricey side, especially considering the portions are quite small for what you pay.

What a fun and great experience at Good Thief! If you enjoy fun cocktails and modernized Vietnamese food, then you will enjoy this place. Their cocktails are unique and well made, definitely some interesting ones available. Their food is solid as well, definitely worth a visit. This is definitely a fun spot to have some different foods. Make sure you get a reservation though.

Good Thief brings elegant, moody Vietnamese inspired design to Main Street, every detail considered without tipping into try hard. Service is first class, sharp and attentive all night 🥂 Food backs up the drinks well. The prawn toast was properly tasty, and the hot chips were soft, fluffy and delightful, simple plates done with care 🍤 Cocktails are the real standout though, inventive and playful without losing balance, properly delicious drinks that show real thought behind the bar. A fast favourite 🍸
