Inspection summary

Hidden Valley Resort - The Birches has been inspected 5 times by Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit since November 18, 2024. The most recent inspection, on July 2, 2026, found no infractions.

3 of 5 inspections on record found no infractions at all. In the past 12 months there were 3 inspections with 4 infractions recorded. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Cleaning and sanitizing.

Recent inspections have recorded more infractions than earlier ones, so it is worth reading the latest reports closely.

What these findings mean

Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.

  • Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk

Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.

Recorded once on June 29, 2026. For example: Utensils sanitized mechanically as prescribed in the regulation.

  • Building, plumbing and upkeepLower risk

Floors, walls and ceilings must be smooth and clean, with working lighting, ventilation, plumbing, hot and cold water, and washrooms. These are rarely an immediate food-safety risk on their own, but persistent problems can lead to pest or sanitation issues.

Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on June 29, 2026. For example: Floors, walls and ceilings are clean and in good repair

  • Other findingsLower risk

Findings that do not fit the categories above, such as follow-ups that confirm an earlier violation was corrected, or requirements specific to this type of facility.

Recorded once on December 17, 2025. For example: Operator practiced safe food handling to ensure food is safe to eat.

We were excited about this experience. The pictures of the beach and the pool, it looked promising. It was probably amazing in the 90s. I’m not basing this on outdated decor. As soon as we got in the room there was a peppery smell that was extremely overpowering. It smelled so bad. The walls actually had dirt marks on them in the bathroom. We changed rooms. Which I have never done in my life. We switched room and it smelled again but not as strong. We decided to go see the pools and beach. We couldn’t find signage to see how to get outside. When we got to the first floor (no elevators) it was filled with cigarette smoke. Not just from one room, it was the entire, long hall. The beach was so good. As I looked back at the resort and out at the water, it’s ridiculous the potential this place has. The tennis court, basketball court… all very run down. Probably last surfaced in the 90s. They had a fire pit which people were enjoying. The outdoor pool was a decent size. We just glanced at it cause it’s a cold evening. We went to the indoor pool. They put a weird grate over the opening where the filter should be. But the grate was only covering 80% of the opening. There was a sign stating “No Smoking in pool area.” We left. We’ve never had to change hotel rooms before and we’ve never just left a building all together. This one did it.

Do not recommend, website is super misleading and it is a shame, as the location is absolutely stunning! Cleanliness of the rooms is questionable but not the end of the world for me personally as we had full days of activities planned and the room was just somewhere to lay our head. Mini fridge not functioning to keep our waters cold and air quality is very poor. Mold in the corners of room. Paid for a bed and breakfast package but the breakfast was not edible and they didn't reduce my stay. Barely warm coffee and ice cold food, muffins and banana bread were dry and hard. Charged a $40 resort fee and we were not able to use any of the advertised beach activities as they shut the beach down at 630pm and take all the activities in! Pool area closes at 9pm. We had day activities planned off site and we were looking forward to using the beach when returning but could not and we were lucky to get to use the pool for 30 mins. Brought this to the staffs attention and they refused to reduce that from the bill as well and claimed the 40$ was a parking fee, which again free parking advertised on their website! Walls super thin, could hear every word from our neighbors and people in the hallways, pool floors feel like slime under your feet and place just looks run down. Front desk staff lack personality. We did have a burger for supper one night and it was very tasty and our server Ross was super friendly and funny. We had some beverages the second night and Ross was bartendering, again super great experience with Ross! Highly recommend going somewhere else, you will be disappointed.

Travelled to the resort with Front Line Tours for 2 nights 3 days. Had a fantastic time, room was on ground floor and this was excellent there are no elevators and my wife uses a walker, nice clean comfy room and 2 beds were just great. Used the hot tub and again used the stairs for access. Had breakfast in Birches Restaurant and also lunch and supper. Good variety of breakfast items. Staff very helpful.

The overall experience is good especially Reena made our experience great right from the booking and checkout. But to the management I would recommend to include free breakfast. Because evn small hotel motel also provides breakfast. Hidden valley being such big name and no breakfast we are disappointed. Also allow people to play the water games and provide the resort staff until 8 PM so guests can make use of the private beach effectively. You know the check in is at 4 and games closed at 5. What people gone do in one hour. Rest all is good, the place and the balcony views are amazing. Will visit again provided the changes and improvements made.

Reena at the front desk was very helpful. Beautiful view, i had an amazing stay for my 5 days here. The pool was open, the kayak at the beach was available. I was very happy that I chose this resort. Conveniently they sell beer at the front desk of the hotel. The restaurant atmosphere was also welcoming and pleasant.
