Inspection summary
Locanda dell'Orso has been inspected 6 times by Vancouver Coastal Health since November 5, 2024. The most recent inspection, on December 16, 2025, found no infractions.
2 of 6 inspections on record found no infractions at all. In the past 12 months there were 2 inspections with 2 infractions recorded. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Cleaning and sanitizing, Pests and Handwashing and staff hygiene.
Recent inspections have recorded fewer infractions than earlier ones, so the record is improving.
What these findings mean
Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.
Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk
Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.
Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on July 17, 2025. For example:
All equipment, food contact surfaces, utensils, dishes & glasses used on the premises are washed and sanitized in a manner that removes contamination.
PestsHigher risk
Signs of mice, rats, cockroaches or flies, or gaps and clutter that let them get in or hide. Pests carry bacteria and can contaminate food and surfaces, so evidence of activity is treated seriously and usually triggers a follow-up visit.
Recorded once on December 13, 2025. For example:
The premises is free of pests.
Handwashing and staff hygieneHigher risk
Hands are the main way germs like norovirus move from people to food. Inspectors look for stocked, accessible handwashing sinks, staff washing hands when required, hair restraints, and sick employees being kept away from food. Gaps here can spread illness quickly.
Recorded once on July 17, 2025. For example:
Each employee demonstrates good personal hygiene and washes their hands as often as necessary to prevent the contamination of food.
Permits, records and postingLower risk
Operating permits, required signage, written procedures and logs. These findings are administrative: the documentation was missing or out of date at the time of inspection.
Recorded 6 times across 4 separate inspections, most recently on December 13, 2025. For example:
Operator of a food service establishment has approved written procedures to ensure the safe and sanitary operation of the establishment.
Food safety training and certificationLower risk
Most jurisdictions require a certified food handler or manager on site, and some require allergen or food-worker training. These findings mean the paperwork or the trained person was missing at the time. They do not by themselves mean food was handled unsafely.
Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on July 22, 2025. For example:
A Certified food safety training course has been taken by the operator and food handlers of the food service establishment.

We had the loveliest weekend lunch here. Charming setting and friendly staff. Each dish had something distinct and memorable. We would recommend everything we ordered, but the marinara 2.0 pizza was a summertime delight with its vibrant cherry tomatoes and nuttier crust. I have been fiendish for lemon lately and this pizza definitely hit. The ragù was luscious and lip-smacking. Strongly recommend the pasta here. After trying this place out, we are highly intrigued by the dinner options and are eager to come back. It is clear this place embodies the warmth and hospitality of the folk tale it’s inspired by! Thanks!!

Absolutely incredible food! The pasta is fresh, the service is good and it is worth what you pay. My wife and I got tagliatelle and agnolotti del plin. Both were made to perfection. The tagliatelle was a bit larger. You can tell they put care into their dishes. We haven't had such good fresh pasta outside of small towns in Italy until today. Fresh makes all of the difference. Texture was great and the flavor was amazing! This place is loved in the neighborhood and I am happy we tried it. We will be back! Real Italians working there by the way.

We visited Locanda dell’Orso and it was absolutely unreal. We started off with a Bellini & Chinotto Italian Soda, followed by the Carne Cruda Crostino, this was probably my favourite dish ever, next we had the Locanda Cesar Salad, and Margherita Sbagliata pizza. The burrata made this a creamy dream come true! Last we had the Wagyu beef Burger, it was the juiciest burger I’ve ever had. For dessert we had the raspberry white chocolate Panna cotta and the raspberry olive oil cake which were both so yummy and full of bold flavors. Overall I was blown away with my dining experience here and I’ve definitely found a new favourite! The service was also very attentive and kind. Will definitely be back!

Got the Lobster Roll, Bella-Vera Pizza, Agnolotti Pomodoro & Crab, Tagliatelle Al Ragu. Our favourite was easily the ragu and then the pizza. Its hard to describe the depth of flavour of the ragu as it was so delicious and they don't cheap out on the meat on the plate! The pizza, while a little heavy due to all the cheese, had great umami and the crust was light and crispy. The squid ink pasta was nice, but nothing special. The lobster roll was disappointing. Ours didn't have much lobster flavour.

I’ve been trying to find an authentic Italian restaurant in Vancouver, and this place really stood out. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and genuine, it honestly reminded me of being back in Italy. The pizza was excellent, with fresh ingredients and great flavor. I’m already looking forward to coming back to try their pasta next time. 100% recommend their pizza. Service was friendly and attentive without being over the top, and the prices felt fair for the quality. They also have a nice wine selection, which added to the overall experience. Overall, one of the best Italian spots I’ve found in Vancouver. I’ll definitely be back.
