Inspection summary
Locus Cafe has been inspected 27 times by Vancouver Coastal Health since March 14, 2016. The most recent inspection, on June 24, 2026, recorded 1 infraction.
5 of 27 inspections on record found no infractions at all. In the past 12 months there were 4 inspections with 9 infractions recorded. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Cleaning and sanitizing, Pests and Food temperature control.
The number of infractions per inspection has stayed roughly the same over time.
What these findings mean
Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.
Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk
Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.
Recorded 19 times across 16 separate inspections, most recently on June 24, 2026. For example:
The premises and all equipment, utensils, and food contact surfaces are maintained in good condition and used in a manner that ensures safe and sanitary food handling.
PestsHigher risk
Signs of mice, rats, cockroaches or flies, or gaps and clutter that let them get in or hide. Pests carry bacteria and can contaminate food and surfaces, so evidence of activity is treated seriously and usually triggers a follow-up visit.
Recorded 17 times across 15 separate inspections, most recently on June 4, 2026. For example:
The premises is free of pests.
Food temperature controlHigher risk
Bacteria multiply fastest between about 4 °C and 60 °C (40 °F to 140 °F). Inspectors check that cold food stays cold, hot food stays hot, cooked food is cooled quickly, and that staff have accurate thermometers. Temperature problems are one of the most common causes of food poisoning, so these are treated as critical findings.
Recorded 10 times across 8 separate inspections, most recently on April 10, 2025. For example:
Potentially hazardous food is thawed in a manner that makes it safe to eat.
Handwashing and staff hygieneHigher risk
Hands are the main way germs like norovirus move from people to food. Inspectors look for stocked, accessible handwashing sinks, staff washing hands when required, hair restraints, and sick employees being kept away from food. Gaps here can spread illness quickly.
Recorded 3 times across 3 separate inspections, most recently on February 18, 2026. For example:
Each employee demonstrates good personal hygiene and washes their hands as often as necessary to prevent the contamination of food.
Protecting food from contaminationHigher risk
This covers how food is stored, prepared and displayed: raw meat kept away from ready-to-eat food, food covered and stored off the floor, and nothing dripping or splashing into it. Cross-contamination from raw to cooked food is a direct route for salmonella and E. coli.
Recorded 3 times across 3 separate inspections, most recently on April 10, 2025. For example:
Food is handled in a sanitary manner and is not subject to contamination.

We came here for a breakfast date. Food was good. Simple, clean, and not greasy at all, unlike typical breakfast spots. Service was good. My only negative is - the coffee was weak. I asked for another espresso shot, but still weak. Overall, very good experience.

I came here for dinner on a Friday night and it wasn't that busy at all. If you desire a different restaurant vibe from the typical, then this is it. The setting was Gothic themed, dark and moody. I felt like a cave-woman in the washroom. Service was really good. Food came out in a timely manner and the restaurant employees and owner checked on us multiple times, while refilling our water. I ordered the linguine which was in their main menu. Apparently they also have another menu which changes every day. My buddies ordered the cod fish from that and lamb chops. I thought the taste of the linguine was okay. It has a slight bitterness to it that I wasn't sure fit well with the rest of the meal. Along with my dish, I ordered a cocktail called Magical Strings. It was too sweet for me. For some reason I thought it would be more on the tangy/citrus side. I didn't get to try it but I thought the lamb chops looked delicious! Seeing other reviews regarding breakfast, I think I would like to come here again just to try their breakfast meals!

Locus felt warmer and more classic than any other restaurant on Main Street. Even though it was my first time there, it felt like visiting my grandma’s house, everything was cozy and comforting for me. When the food came out, I could really see and feel the care put into every dish. It made me think, “This place is the real deal.” I had the duck, and the texture and juiciness were amazing. I also tried the gnocchi, and it wasn’t just boiled, i think, it seemed like it was grilled or lightly fried after(unsure though :)), which made the texture and sauce go together so well. The servers were super friendly and left a great impression. I definitely want to go back again.

We went for brunch with my nephew. First time there, I was so impressed!! Delicious food, great friendly service. Awesome vegan options and non vegan. I had the tofu rancheros. Was sooooo good. With veggie links. I definitely want to go back.
