Inspection summary

Lu Charcoal Grill has been inspected 8 times by Vancouver Coastal Health since April 24, 2019. The most recent inspection, on July 23, 2026, found no infractions.

3 of 8 inspections on record found no infractions at all. In the past 12 months there were 2 inspections with 5 infractions recorded. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Cleaning and sanitizing, Protecting food from contamination and Pests.

The number of infractions per inspection has stayed roughly the same over time.

What these findings mean

Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.

  • Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk

Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.

Recorded 5 times across 3 separate inspections, most recently on July 9, 2026. For example: The premises and all equipment, utensils, and food contact surfaces are maintained in good condition and used in a manner that ensures safe and sanitary food handling.

  • Protecting food from contaminationHigher risk

This covers how food is stored, prepared and displayed: raw meat kept away from ready-to-eat food, food covered and stored off the floor, and nothing dripping or splashing into it. Cross-contamination from raw to cooked food is a direct route for salmonella and E. coli.

Recorded 4 times across 4 separate inspections, most recently on July 9, 2026. For example: Food is handled in a sanitary manner and is not subject to contamination.

  • PestsHigher risk

Signs of mice, rats, cockroaches or flies, or gaps and clutter that let them get in or hide. Pests carry bacteria and can contaminate food and surfaces, so evidence of activity is treated seriously and usually triggers a follow-up visit.

Recorded once on July 9, 2026. For example: The premises is free of pests.

  • Permits, records and postingLower risk

Operating permits, required signage, written procedures and logs. These findings are administrative: the documentation was missing or out of date at the time of inspection.

Recorded 3 times across 3 separate inspections, most recently on July 9, 2026. For example: Operator of a food service establishment has developed, maintained, and followed approved written procedures to ensure that a health hazard does not occur.

  • Building, plumbing and upkeepLower risk

Floors, walls and ceilings must be smooth and clean, with working lighting, ventilation, plumbing, hot and cold water, and washrooms. These are rarely an immediate food-safety risk on their own, but persistent problems can lead to pest or sanitation issues.

Recorded once on March 4, 2021. For example: Operator assessed their premises and taken steps to prevent congregation of patrons near or outside their premises

The only plus is they open early and have a good variety of food choices. That’s where the good points end. It’s far worse than Dachuan Restaurant. Probably to cater to elderly customers, they barely use any salt, so the food tastes really bland and unappetizing. Total letdown, definitely not recommended.

Food is delicious and served very fast. 推荐煎饼果子、茶蛋、小米粥。If you order delivery, the food is usually kept in very good condition as well - warm and crisp. I like their breakfast best. As for grills, there might be better options in town, but the price here is very fair compared to other places. So in general, this is still one of my favorite restaurants in Richmond.

Great experience at Lu Charcoal Grill in Richmond! The charcoal-grilled skewers were smoky, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Portions were generous, the atmosphere was lively, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.

One of the best authentic Northern Chinese cuisines in the Greater Vancouver Area. As someone with Northern heritage, I wholeheartedly recommend this place. Their deep-fried eggplant with ground meat, the steamed ShaoMai, and marinated steamed pork are wonderfully cooked. Been to this place many times now, and it never disappoints. Their food is so amazing, I feel obliged to share this with the rest of the world. Strong recommendation! You have to try this place!

Our hometown is 天津 coming here for authentic food just like how they should taste is more than just food! All the lamb dishes are amazing! And the 羊肉烧麦is on point and top noche. Highly recommend for something strictly speaking might be only available in China if it weren’t for this place here.
