    • 05. Do food handlers refrain from handling food while ill and have acceptable attire and hygiene?
      • Three flavours of hard ice cream were available to be scooped into cones for sale. No handwashing sink is available in the immediate service area. Although gloves were present, it was discussed with the operator that, in the absence of a nearby handwashing sink, hand sanitizer must be readily accessible. A bottle of hand sanitizer was relocated from the cash register area to the ice cream service area during the inspection. The operator further indicated that gloves may be reused; it was clarified that gloves are single-use only and must be discarded after each use.The cleaning procedure for ice cream scoops was described by the operator as: rinsing in water, followed by sanitizing with a bleach solution, and subsequently rinsing three additional times. A review of the file indicated that a previous inspection report 2017 documented that ice cream service had been discussed and approved by the District Public Health Inspector at that time. However, should the operator intend to continue offering ice cream service on a long-term basis, upgrades to handwashing and dishwashing facilities will be required to meet Alberta Health Services (AHS) standards. The operator should plan to:1. Install a handwashing sink in the ice cream service area (front).2. Upgrade the existing back sink to, at minimum, a two-compartment sink to support proper dishwashing in accordance with AHS requirements.
    • 08. Do food handlers ensure that food is protected from contamination (unless noted elsewhere)(Non-Critical)?
      • The door to the operator's personal residence was open at the time of inspection. Discussed with the operator, the door is to be kept closed to ensure appropriate separation from the food establishment. Please see the Food Retail and Foodservices Code section 2.17, page 31 for details.
    • 14. Does the facility have an adequate supply of potable hot and cold running water and is the water sampled at required intervals?
      • The routine bacteriological water sample was overdue for submission at the time of site visit. A bacteriological water sample was collected during the site visit. Results were unsatisfactory with the presence of Total coliforms detected. Information on safe water use and instructions for resampling were sent by email to the operator on June 25.
    • 19. Does the facility have a valid permit and does the facility operate in compliance with the conditions of that permit, or is the facility awaiting approval prior to operation?
      • Unlabeled frozen meat products (hamburgers and hot dogs) were observed in a freezer. The operator advised that these items are purchased in bulk from a wholesaler and then portioned into smaller quantities on-site using a vacuum sealer. There is no record of written approval permitting the repackaging of meat products. This practice is to be discontinued, as it is outside the conditions of the current food handling permit and does not meet retail food labelling requirements (see: inspection.canada.ca – Retail foods).Note: there was a hotdog toaster found in a cupboard near the coffee makers, at the time of inspection. This was discussed with the operator, and they indicated this is not something that they have used.
