Inspection summary
Nando's Chicken #161 (South Burnaby) has been inspected 16 times by Fraser Health Authority since August 27, 2020. The most recent inspection, on October 15, 2026, recorded 2 infractions.
5 of 16 inspections on record found no infractions at all. In the past 12 months there were 2 inspections with 4 infractions recorded. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Food temperature control, Protecting food from contamination and Pests.
The number of infractions per inspection has stayed roughly the same over time.
What these findings mean
Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.
Food temperature controlHigher risk
Bacteria multiply fastest between about 4 °C and 60 °C (40 °F to 140 °F). Inspectors check that cold food stays cold, hot food stays hot, cooked food is cooled quickly, and that staff have accurate thermometers. Temperature problems are one of the most common causes of food poisoning, so these are treated as critical findings.
Recorded 7 times across 7 separate inspections, most recently on October 15, 2026. For example:
206 - Hot potentially hazardous food stored/displayed below 60 °C. [s. 14(2)]
Protecting food from contaminationHigher risk
This covers how food is stored, prepared and displayed: raw meat kept away from ready-to-eat food, food covered and stored off the floor, and nothing dripping or splashing into it. Cross-contamination from raw to cooked food is a direct route for salmonella and E. coli.
Recorded 3 times across 3 separate inspections, most recently on October 15, 2026. For example:
209 - Food not protected from contamination [s. 12(a)]
PestsHigher risk
Signs of mice, rats, cockroaches or flies, or gaps and clutter that let them get in or hide. Pests carry bacteria and can contaminate food and surfaces, so evidence of activity is treated seriously and usually triggers a follow-up visit.
Recorded 3 times across 3 separate inspections, most recently on October 23, 2024. For example:
304 - Premises not free of pests [s. 26(a)]
Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk
Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.
Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on October 12, 2022. For example:
308 - Equipment/utensils/food contact surfaces are not in good working order [s. 16(b)]
Handwashing and staff hygieneHigher risk
Hands are the main way germs like norovirus move from people to food. Inspectors look for stocked, accessible handwashing sinks, staff washing hands when required, hair restraints, and sick employees being kept away from food. Gaps here can spread illness quickly.
Recorded once on March 5, 2026. For example:
401 - Adequate handwashing stations not available for employees [s. 21(4)]

Boxes of meat are being stacked beside the smallest shelf which is making it difficult to lift and gain access to the bottom boxes.
- Corrective Action(s): Replace the 3ft wide shelf with one that's at least 4 ft wide. Or provide another shelving unit inside the cooler by the door that's at least 2-3 ft wide.

- Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): The chickens are supposed to be cooked to 185 degF (85 degC) before being taken out of the ovens. As per the cook log, chickens are being taken out before the minimum temperature is reached.
- Corrective Action(s): Start recording cook temperatures in degF instead of degC since the required temperature listed in the log sheet is in degF. This will avoid any confusion. Ensure that all chicken is cooked to 185 degF prior to being taken out of the oven as per your FSP.

- 204 - Food not cooked or reheated in a manner that makes it safe to eat [s. 14(1)]
- Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Temperature logs had much lower cooking temperatures recorded than the required 185 degF (85 degC). The log had cooking temperatures recorded in the low 70's Fahrenheit. Even if staff put F instead of C, these temperatures are too low. Chicken is not being cooked adequately. THIS IS A SERIOUS CONCERN AS IT CAN LEAD TO FOODBORNE ILLNESS OUTBREAKS!
- Corrective Action(s): All chicken (whole and pieces) MUST be cooked to at least 185 degF (85 degC) as per your FSP. Take the chicken from the warmers and reheat to 185F (85C) before storing in the warmer. Educate all staff on the proper cooking temperatures. Once the chicken is cooked to 85 degC, it can be stored in the hotholding unit at 60 degC or above.

Each day a tray of buns is pulled from the cooler and they sit out at room temperature the whole day until used up.
- Corrective Action(s): Discontinue this practice immediately. Once the garlic spread has been applied to the buns, these buns must be kept refrigerated. Store the buns inside the cooler, not out at room temperature.
