  9. Routine Inspection

    1 infraction

    • 304 - Premises not free of pests [s. 26(a)]
      • Observation: Ants noticed along floor wall connections throughout premises (minor).
      • Significant accumulation of ants noted in back of a garbage enclosure. Showed staff and took pictures.
      • Corrective Action(s): Have pest control technician return and provide specific actions and recommendations to eliminate the ants in this premises. This will be reviewed at follow up inspection noted on report.
      • Violation Score: 3
      • 306 - Food premises not maintained in a sanitary condition [s. 17(1)]
      • Observation: Minor food debris accumulations noted under equipment and inside some of the cupboards. Encased floor drain under ice reservoir observed filthy. Significant biomat accumulations in both the drain line leading into the drain and the drain itself. This will serve as an ideal breeding environment for fruit and/or drain flies, although flies not noticable at this time.
      • Corrective Action(s): The general environment of this premises requires a more thorough and comprehensive cleaning to remove food sources from pests (ants now, but other pests possible). Improved cleaning practices will reduce the impact of current pest infestation and likelihood of future infestations.
      • Starbuck's sanitation plan includes daily cleaning of all floor drains. Staff and management must account for improved floor drain maintenance, regardless of accessibility.
      • *Perform a clean up. This will be reviewed at follow up inspection date noted on report.
      • Violation Score: 9
  10. Routine Inspection

    1 infraction

    • 306 - Food premises not maintained in a sanitary condition [s. 17(1)]
      • Observation: Cavity above floor drain on bar side of counter (where the fly bait trap is located) was observed dirty. Pipes, walls and underside of sink accumulating food spills and debris. Drain looks not bad, but this area will support harbourage and breeding of fruit/drain flies. This area produces a lot of condensation which will also support pest breeding if not regularly cleaned.
      • Cavity and floor drain below ice bin near drive thru observed with a significant amount of slimes and organic matt development, especially coating the inside of this pipe. This clearly receives inadequate routine cleaning and is an ideal breeding environment for fruit/drain flies.
      • **Pictures taken.
      • Corrective Action(s): Starbucks needs to implement a systematic, thorough and adequate cleaning program for all floor drain and surrounding areas. This was identified on previous inspection report.
      • Regular cleaning must take place in these environments regardless of their respective ease of access. If access is a barrier to cleaning and keeping these areas clean, a redesign may be required.
      • A review of procedures will take place on re-inspection date noted on report.
      • Violation Score: 9
  11. Routine Inspection

    1 infraction

    • 308 - Equipment/utensils/food contact surfaces are not in good working order [s. 16(b)]
      • Observation: A) Several of the floor drains or area around the floor drains not accepting the water properly, resulting in minor to moderate water accumulation on the floor. Discussed with construction lead.
      • B) Drain pipe from sink leaking at elbow under counter.
      • Corrective Action(s): Items discussed listed as construction deficiencies and will be fixed. Ensure any residual water is removed and area dried.
      • Violation Score: 3
  12. Routine Inspection

    2 infractions

    • 301 - Equipment/utensils/food contact surfaces not maintained in sanitary condition [s. 17(1)]
      • Observation: Pitcher rinsers observed dirty and slime matt developing on one or two of these units at the point of connection with the potable water supply. This could be a point of contamination to the rinsing process.
      • Corrective Action(s): These units should be disconnected on a regular basis (weekly?) and properly washed rinsed and sanitized to remove any organic sludge build-up - and to be more clean. Ensure the faucet is also cleaned and sanitized including the faucet sieve (unscrew, clean and sanitize). This will be reviewed at next scheduled inspection.
      • Violation Score: 5
    • 304 - Premises not free of pests [s. 26(a)]
      • Observation: Drains by main coffee station observed with a lot of sludge build-up. Observed ants coming out of main floor drain.
      • Corrective Action(s): Discuss strategies to eliminate ants from premises with pest control. Address drain cleaning and maintenance with both physical and chemical interventions. Improved cleanliness in drains will also help reduce the burden of drain flies as it gets closer to summer breeding season.

    • 302 - Equipment/utensils/food contact surfaces not properly washed and sanitized [s. 17(2)]
      • Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Sinks designated for spot ware washing not sanitized effectively. Observed staff rince out these sinks.

      • Violation Score: 5
    • 304 - Premises not free of pests [s. 26(a)]
      • Observation: Observed flies, drain flies and ants in front prep area of premises. Noted UV light placed in behind equipment, but not easily accessible.
      • Corrective Action(s): Improve cleaning practices to reduce pest access to food sources. Thorough cleaning necessary. Discuss pest issues with Ecolab. Have them comment. **See public comments. Review on follow up date noted on report.
      • Violation Score: 9
      • 306 - Food premises not maintained in a sanitary condition [s. 17(1)]
      • Observation: General sanitation practices marginal. Observed work counters accumulating water and liquids that have spread under work surfaces. Water observed on floor in several areas including but not limited to floor drains. General condition of floor under counters and work surfaces in the front not adequately clean.
      • Corrective Action(s): Front part of premises requires a complete cleaning on and under counters. Improved sanitation is imperative to control pests especially flies, ants and drain flies.
