- During the inspection of the modular building, it was noted that the baby gate was missing. The baby gate, or similar partition, is required to prevent unauthorized access of the kitchen area. It was installed during the inspection.Since the baby gate is removable, it has been recommended that the facility look to have a more permanent partition so that this does not become a re-occurring violation.

- There was a power bar present on the floor in the toddler room which did not have adequate protection from child access. To reduce the risk, please secure the power bar to the wall out of reach of the children in this room.

- The child safety lock on the staff fridge in the kinder room was not secure and was locked during the inspection. Staff keep personal food items in the mini fridge that children should not have free access to.

- The tall shelving unit in the basement (kinder) room was not secured to the wall and created a potential hazard. Please secure this shelving unit to the wall.

- Handwashing sinks in both buildings were properly stocked with hot, running water and adequate supplies with the exception of the children's handwash sinks in the modular building. Paper towels for hand drying were missing in this area. Please restock.

- 10. Is a properly supplied first aid kit provided and readily available?
- Antiseptic wipes were past their expiry date. Please ensure that the antiseptic wipes for all first aid kits are checked and updated as necessary.Please advise this office when new antiseptic wipes are acquired.

- The water pressure at 2 handwashing sinks in diapering areas was very low and would have impeded thorough handwashing. The pressure at the taps was adjusted during the inspection. As per onsite discussion, the pressure should remain at the normal setting. If the facility is having issues with children leaving taps running, then alternative arrangements can be made (e.g. keeping bathroom doors locked from the outside when they aren't in use to prevent unauthorized access by children).

- Staff personal effects (a purse, keys, and a jacket) were observed to be resting on the shelved intended for air drying cleaned and disinfected toys.Please discuss proper storage of personal items with staff. This facility does have multiple areas where staff could appropriately store belongings.

- The water well is suspect of being within 400m of a old landfill. The water from the plumbing shall be used for hygiene and toilet purposes only. Water was being used to wash dishware.The well is a pit well. These wells are prone to contamination due to flooding. Please submit a water sample every 1-2 weeks. Water samples can be dropped off at Onoway Community Health on Tuesdays 12pm to 2:30 pmDue to the above issues, discussions and investigations are on-going on alternate water supply and safety measures, as information comes forward.Bottle water shall be used for any consumption purposes. A water bottle and dispenser is on-site for consumption purposes.

- An unlabeled spray bottle with a clear liquid was found in the toy washing sink area. This was discussed with the operator. All containers must be properly labelled with their contents to facilitate safe use.

- Staff fridges in each childcare room require a child proof fridge lock to restrict access to the fridges. Staff keep personal food items in the mini fridges that children should not have free access to.
- 05. Are communicable diseases at this facility being properly managed?
- During the inspection it was noted that several children in Room 1 appeared to have runny noses.The Guide for Outbreak Prevention & Control in Child Care Facilities has been provided by email. Operator is to review the guide and follow the illness monitoring and reporting requirements moving forward. Please note that AHS requires that facilities monitor for illness, including the following: • parents/guardians should watch their children daily for new symptoms of illness and keep them home if they are symptomatic. • staff should watch children for new symptoms of illness and follow the facility illness plan if symptoms are identified. The Population Public Health Support Team (PPHST) must be notified if any of the reporting criteria in Table A (page 7) of the Guide for Outbreak Prevention & Control in Child Care Facilities are met.
- 06. Are proper protocols being followed in regards to client care?
- The following observations were noted in regard to the diapering areas: 1. Each diapering surface had a Microfiber Baby Changing Table Cover. This cover is not appropriate for use in a commercial facility as it cannot be cleaned and disinfected properly between each diaper change. As per the Institutions Regulation Section 30(c), "the top of the surface of change tables shall be of a non-moisture absorbing material that can be scrubbed and disinfected frequently."The microfiber covers must be removed. 2. An approved disinfectant was not available to properly disinfect the area as required. The AHS Diapering Procedure poster will be provided by email. Approved disinfectants for disinfecting the area during regular operation are: 0.5% Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide Solution OR 100 ppm Chlorine SolutionPlease note that if the facility is on a declared outbreak, then increased disinfection procedures will be required. The facility has bleach available to meet the requirement. Please have appropriate solutions available in properly labelled bottles in each diaper change area. Caution should be taken to appropriately store the spray solutions out of reach of children.
- 17. Is the facility and equipment being maintained in a suitable manner (Critical)?
- There were several different products noted to be available for surface disinfection. The noted produces include: Sol-u-guard Botanical, Lysol Wipes, and Great Value Wipes. Please note that currently, only disinfectants listed in Appendix F of the Health and Safety Guide for Operators of Child Care Facilities are appropriate for use in commercial facilities. Please ensure that products used for toy and surface disinfection meet this requirement.

- A full outdoor playground inspection was not completed. The following was observed from inside the facility: Compaction of protective surfacing around slides: Unsatisfactory - operator asked to remove all slides that do not meet the protective surfacing requirements. It was stated that the clients at the facility move some of the slides around. If slides cannot be kept in areas with the required protective surfacing, then they should be removed from the playspace.
