  1. Monitoring

    6 infractions

    • F1.2 Are proper temperature controls maintained to ensure safe storage and display of foods?
      • Observation(s): F1.2B(1): The glass-door cooler in the kitchen is not working. Perishable food (cheese) inside the unit was measured at 20°C and is not safe for consumption. A replacement cooler is already onsite, to be installed shortly. Corrective Action: Discard the unsafe product. Only store shelf stable food in the broken cooler until the new one is installed. F1.2B(2): Food in the upright cooler in the back area was measured at 7°C. Corrective Action: Adjust or service the cooler so it maintains food at 4°C or colder. Hold food at 60°C or hotter on the stove or in a warming unit. Check temperatures with a sanitized probe thermometer.
      • F1.2B Potentially hazardous foods must be stored or displayed at a temperature of 4 °C (40 °F) or colder.
    • F1.3 Are proper cooling and reheating procedures followed?
      • Observation(s): F1.3: Cooked food is sometimes cooled and reheated twice. This subjects the food to longer times at unsafe temperatures, increasing the foodborne illness risk. Corrective Action: Reheat cooked food once only. Discard any food that remains after reheating and holding. Control batch quantity to minimize waste. Cool potentially hazardous food from 60°C (140°F) to 20°C (68°F) within 2 hours, then from 20°C (68°F) to 4°C (40°F) within 4 hours. Discard the food if either standard is not met. Check using a timer and probe thermometer. The cooling rate can be increased by dividing food into smaller batches, using wide shallow trays, stirring frequently, or placing food containers over a 50-50 ice-water bath.
    • F1.5 Has the operator taken steps to ensure employees are using adequate hygiene measures to prevent contamination of food?
      • Observation(s): F1.5: Inadequate handwashing technique. Corrective Action: Lather with soap for at least 15 seconds. Use paper towel to turn off the tap. Do not touch the sink basin or other contaminated surface afterwards. Rinsing hands with water only is insufficient; any interaction with the hand sink must involve proper handwashing.
    • F2.3 Are food contact surfaces, utensils and equipment washed and sanitized in a manner that removes/prevents contamination?
      • Observation(s): F2.3A(1): The interior sanitize rinse temperature of the mechanical dishwasher is variable. Most plate surface tests were non-compliant, despite the exterior displays indicating correct manifold temperatures. Recurring infraction. Corrective Action: Service the dishwasher so the sanitize cycle consistently reaches 71°C or hotter at the interior. In the meantime, manually clean and sanitize items in the 2-compartment sink. F2.3A(2): The detergent jug for the dishwasher is empty. Corrective Action: Provide new detergent. Check the chemical levels regularly, replace as needed.
      • F2.3A Mechanical dishwasher/glasswasher must provide sufficient washing and sanitizing action to remove contamination.
    • F2.4 Are proper freezing and thawing procedures followed?
      • Observation(s): F2.4B: Food is thawed at room temperature in the dishwashing area. Corrective Action: Thaw food in clean areas using safe methods only: Under refrigeration at 4°C or colder, submerged in the original sealed package or in a hermetically sealed container under cold running water or submerged in cold water that is changed every 30 min, as part of the cooking or reheating process (only when thawing is accounted for in determining the cooking/reheating time), or by microwaving and immediately transferring to cooking equipment with no interruption in the process.
      • F2.4B Potentially hazardous food must be thawed using appropriate equipment and/or approved methods.
    • F2.5 Are the premises and equipment properly maintained and operated in a sanitary manner (i.e. ongoing maintenance)?
      • Observation(s): F2.5D: One spray bottle is not labeled. Another bottle contains cleaner, but is labeled as sanitizer. Spray bottles are suspended over the hand sink splash guard. This can contaminate the exterior of the bottles. Corrective Action: Label all spray bottles to identify their contents. Fill bottles with the correct product. Store on a clean surface above the floor and away from food and contamination sources.
      • F2.5D Chemicals, cleaners and other agents must be properly labelled and stored separately from food to prevent contamination.

Great food, cute shop, and warm services. We came from Calgary and feel very blessed to stumble across this restaurant. I don’t have much experiences with Mexican food, but this restaurant has successfully made Pozole my new comfort food.

Dined for the first time at this quaint Mexican place on 30th. Enjoyed three kinds of very tasty tacos. Corn tortillas were super fresh and hot off the grill. Super friendly husband and wife operation and demonstrated their gratitude for being patient on a super busy Friday night. Will be back to try their other menu items. Definite hidden Mexican gem.

The service from Oscar and Angela was world-class. They were incredibly inviting and made me feel like a local. Angela even went above and beyond, giving me a stack of their handmade corn tortillas to go and taking the time to explain exactly how to prep them in my RV for a proper breakfast with fried eggs and beans. It’s rare to find a place with this much character and heart. If you're in Vernon, this is the only spot worth your time.

As a Mexican I can say this is the best and most authentic Mexican food in all of Vernon if not the entire okanagan valley. After months of trying every Mexican restaurant between here and Kelowna, I have finally found real flavorful Mexican food that tastes like it came right out of my mothers kitchen I ordered the gorditas, and my spouse ordered the tacos. The cook is the owners wife from Guadalajara, who makes all the tortillas fresh in house. Everything was exactly as I remember in Mexico and in south Texas. Real flavors that represent a real food culture. I almost cried it was so good and familiar. The atmosphere was decorated traditionally and there was a television playing recording of live performances by some of Mexico’s most talented musicians. I ordered a margarita to start and some chips came complimentary. This food is incredible and we have eaten here at least once a week since we found them.

Woah, this place just felt (and tasted) like home! As a mexican living in Canada, we often get questions of where to find authentic mexican food… so I am happy to let you know that this is THE place. The food is delicious, authentic home-made style, and it brought me back fond memories of meals with family and friends back in Guadalajara, Mexico. You can taste the care and love they put to their menu in every bite. We had the pleasure of chatting with both owners. They are amazing, kind, hard-working, and care a lot about the people and community they serve. They make everyone feel welcome, and offer a friendly and easy-going vibe. If you have read this far, just try it. You won’t regret it. And if you are not into mexican food (which could also be true), at least you will get the experience we mexicans often miss while away from home: having a tasty home-made meal made by your mother, while sharing that moment with friends and family.
