    • F2.3 Are food contact surfaces, utensils and equipment washed and sanitized in a manner that removes/prevents contamination?
      • Observation(s): QUATs sanitizer could not be detected in spray bottle labelled sanitizer and used as such. Remade bottle - operator tested new bottle with test strips and found it to be at 200-400ppm. Operator informed to ensure all bottles of sanitizer are made at appropriate dilutions and rotated frequently
    • F2.5 Are the premises and equipment properly maintained and operated in a sanitary manner (i.e. ongoing maintenance)?
      • Observation(s): Rodent pellets on racking for dry storage in bakery need to be cleaned up. Please ensure to clean this with a solution of 100-200ppm bleach and respirator to prevent inhalation of pathogenic material. Please send pictures of these racks after cleaned by August 31st 2018 Dishwasher lighting not covered but may have been replaced with shatterproof bulbs. Operator is to verify this and inform via email Slicers appeared in sanitary condition at time of inspection No pooling of condensate observed in any cooler. However, bakery walk in freezer does have excess amounts of ice build up all over packaging and racks. This is indicative of moisture issues -- operator was aware of this and has tried to diagnose issue in the past but would follow up based on amount of ice build up.

    • F2.5 Are the premises and equipment properly maintained and operated in a sanitary manner (i.e. ongoing maintenance)?
      • Observation(s): 1. Observed some debris left on the blade protector of the cheese slicer. According to operator, the slicer has not been used today. Operator informed that this will be cleaned and sanitized right away. Please ensure that cleaning procedures for the cheese slicer is part of the sanitation plan. 2. Light fixture located above the dishwashing area is still missing a cover. This is a repeated infraction. Please ensure a cover or protective sleeves are provided to protect from shatters in case of breakage. 3. A leak is observed in the pizza line cooler. Pooling of water is noted on the bottom shelf in the line cooler. Please have the cooler serviced to ensure there is no more leak. Note: High temperature dishwasher reached an adequate final rinse temperature of 72.4C (measured at the dish). A dishwashing safe thermometer with maximum hold setting is recommended to verify the final rinse temperature. Please ensure all sanitizer spray bottles are properly labelled.
      • F2.5A All equipment, utensils and food contact surfaces used on the premises must be kept in good working order to ensure the sanitary handling of food.
      • F2.5J Artificial lighting must have shatterproof covers or shatterproof bulbs.
    • F2.7 Are there handwashing stations available and properly supplied?
      • Observation(s): Hot water was not available at the handwashing sink located next to the double sink. Hot water was adjusted at the time of inspection. CDI - Corrected During Inspection.
      • F2.7A Handwashing station must be supplied with hot and cold running water.

    • F1.4 - Are proper refrigeration, freezing and thawing procedures followed?
      • Observation(s): 1. Temperature of top display case was measured at between 6C and 8C. This section stores pop, juices and dairy. Requested to store dairy on the lower case where it is capable of maintaining at 4C or colder. CDI - Corrected During Inspection. 2. Missing thermometers in several cold-holding units e.g. cafe sandwich display case, pizza line cooler. It is also recommended to place an extra thermometer in the deli service case.
      • F1.4B - Accurate thermometers must be provided to monitor equipment.
    • F2.4 - Are foods handled in a sanitary manner and protected from contamination?
      • Observation(s): Deli department: - Observed a container of uncooked chicken stored in walk-in cooler uncovered/unprotected. Please ensure all foods are stored covered and protected from contamination. Bakery department: - Observed open bags of flour in the baking area. Please ensure all open items are stored in pest-proof containers.
      • F2.4A - The operator must ensure that all food on the premises is protected from contamination.
    • F3.4 - Are the premises, equipment and utensils designed and maintained to ensure safe and sanitary food handling?
      • Observation(s): 1. Light fixture located above the dishwashing area is missing a cover. Please ensure a cover or protective sleeves are provided to prevent shatters in case of breakage. 2. Spray bottle of sanitizer is not labelled. Please ensure to label all chemicals. CDI - Corrected During Inspection.
    • F3.5 - Are there handwashing stations available and properly supplied?
      • Observation(s): Handwashing station next to the two compartment sink did not have hot/warm water to allow for proper handwashing. Dial was adjusted at the time of inspection. CDI - Corrected During Inspection.

    • 4 - Are proper refrigeration, freezing and thawing procedures followed?
      • Observation(s): 1. Temperature of display cooler storing sandwiches, wraps, cooked BBQ ribs and chicken was measured at between 8C and 10C. Items were removed from sale at the time of inspection. CDI - Corrected During Inspection. Bottom level of the same cooler unit storing beverages was measured at ~2C. Directed manager to start storing potentially hazardous foods at this level and check the temperature often. Until the top level is capable of maintaining at 4C or less, no potentially hazardous foods could be stored there. 2. Temperature of 2nd prep line cooler in the kitchen was measured at ~8C. Temperature dial was adjusted to a colder setting at the time of inspection and staff were requested to monitor the temperature. Jan 19, 2016 - Deli manager informed that this cooler has been emptied and temperature is being monitored. If temperature does not drop to 4C or less then it will be serviced. Jan 20, 2016 - Deli manager informed that the refrigeration company is coming to look at this cooler today. Note: It was noted that the display cooler and all prep line coolers located in kitchen are not connected to the temperature alarm system. Therefore temperatures for these coolers must be monitored and recorded manually. Please ensure accurate thermometers are available. NSF-certified thermometers are recommended. Jan 19, 2016 - Operator informed that a new cooler temperatures log has been implemented.
      • 4.1 - Potentially hazardous food must be maintained at 4°C or colder.
      • 4.2 - Accurate thermometers must be provided to monitor equipment.
    • 8 - Are equipment, food contact surfaces and utensils washed, sanitized and stored in a manner that removes/prevents contamination?
      • Observation(s): A bucket of sanitizer solution for wiping cloths provided <200ppm of Quats. Sanitizer solution was changed at the time of inspection. CDI - Corrected During Inspection. Note: It is recommended that a NSF-certified dishwasher safe thermometer with maximum holding setting is used to monitor the final rinse temperature of each load, since the dishwasher needs to be ran a few times to reach the appropriate final rinse temperature.

Corrected during inspection. > Bleach solution for wiping cloth should be made by adding 1 oz of household bleach to 1 gallon (4L) of water to create 200ppm of sanitizer solution in order to properly sanitize used cloths.     It was discouraging when I was searching for BC or at least Canadian grown apples last week in the Salmon Arm location. Yes there was one variety of apple from a local grower but all of the other 5 or 6 varieties of apples were from the USA. Can you not bring in more BC grown apples? This just leads me to believe that due diligence is not being done for your patrons in sourcing what your customers are looking for.

    They never mention expiry date just package date. You bring it and leave it in your fridge for a day or two and it starts to rot. This chicken pack was intended to use the same day and had to trash two pieces out as they were smelly and looked discolored at one end. Same goes with Save On Foods in this town. These grocery shops will make all the customers into vegan if this go unchecked by food safety departments. Askews chicken 👎👎👎

    First here Askews but it seems pretty good grocies store,great location,interior is very neat & bright from sunlight,stocks are well organized lots of new different products that i never been seen in wallmart and super store.

    I’ve never cooked a steak before so I was hesitant in the meat section but Lynn (the lady stocking up the shelves) was so incredibly helpful, she was very knowledgeable and I felt like I was talking to a friend. She even went out of her way to go get me a better piece of meat. Was having a rough morning but she made it so much better. Thank you :)

    This is where I shop 99% of the time. It's a beautiful store and they carry a lot of things that other places don't. Hands down they have the best meat dept, wellness center and produce dept. The staff are cool, very helpful, and they know their stuff. Thanks for all the hard work.

    During my road trip from Jasper to Vancouver, I made a stop at Askew's Foods in Salmon Arm to charge my Tesla. The Supercharger station was convenient and well-maintained. Inside, I found a clean store with friendly staff, a great selection of local products, and delicious snacks. A fantastic pit stop for both charging and refreshments!
