Inspection summary
Double Black Cafe has been inspected 7 times by Interior Health Authority since May 17, 2022. The most recent inspection, on January 13, 2026, recorded 4 infractions.
4 of 7 inspections on record found no infractions at all. In the past 12 months there was 1 inspection with 4 infractions recorded. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Cleaning and sanitizing, Protecting food from contamination and Food temperature control.
Recent inspections have recorded more infractions than earlier ones, so it is worth reading the latest reports closely.
What these findings mean
Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.
Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk
Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.
Recorded once on January 13, 2026. For example:
3 Are food contact surfaces, utensils and equipment washed and sanitized in a manner that removes/prevents contamination?
Protecting food from contaminationHigher risk
This covers how food is stored, prepared and displayed: raw meat kept away from ready-to-eat food, food covered and stored off the floor, and nothing dripping or splashing into it. Cross-contamination from raw to cooked food is a direct route for salmonella and E. coli.
Recorded once on December 14, 2023. For example:
5 Are the premises and equipment properly maintained and operated in a sanitary manner (i.e. ongoing maintenance)?
Food temperature controlHigher risk
Bacteria multiply fastest between about 4 °C and 60 °C (40 °F to 140 °F). Inspectors check that cold food stays cold, hot food stays hot, cooked food is cooled quickly, and that staff have accurate thermometers. Temperature problems are one of the most common causes of food poisoning, so these are treated as critical findings.
Recorded once on June 9, 2023. For example:
2 Are proper temperature controls maintained to ensure safe storage and display of foods?
Permits, records and postingLower risk
Operating permits, required signage, written procedures and logs. These findings are administrative: the documentation was missing or out of date at the time of inspection.
Recorded 2 times on January 13, 2026. For example:
3 Are written food handling procedures (Food Safety Plan) current and available on site?
Other findingsLower risk
Findings that do not fit the categories above, such as follow-ups that confirm an earlier violation was corrected, or requirements specific to this type of facility.
Recorded once on January 13, 2026. For example:
1 Does the facility have proper monitoring supplies?

I travel a handful of time to Kicking Horse every year and this has become my go to place. I love their food. Everything I ever tried is delicious. I especially love the poutine. I think their poutine gravy is the best this side of the Canadian prairies. The crepes are pretty good too. Fun fact: you can get service in both official languages, a rarity in BC... Highly recommend.

Wonderful spot to sit and have lunch. Great views of the mountains. The food is first class. I had the John's Toasty which was delicious. My wife had the Chicken Panini and she was pleased with the amount of chicken in it. Great tasting coffee. Great portions at a reasonable price.

Amazing food, hands down the best place to eat on the hill. I ordered the brisket burger wich tasted unbelievably good, And the service was excellent as well. Though the line was a little long.

I ate a blueberry scone in every cafe I went to over 2 weeks of road tripping through the Rocky Mountain towns and the one from double black was easily the best. Perhaps the best I’ve ever had. I’m back in Australia and still thinking about how good it was. Absolute perfection I will be thinking about it forever.
