About inspections in Toronto

Toronto Public Health runs the well-known DineSafe program across the City of Toronto, inspecting every restaurant, café, and food store and posting a green (pass), yellow (conditional pass), or red (closed) placard at each. We collect those DineSafe results here so you can search a specific spot and read its full inspection history in one place.

How Toronto’s results work

Results are based on official public health inspections. Depending on the jurisdiction you may see colour-coded placards or a numerical score — our placards and scores guide explains what each result means, and our guide to checking inspections in Canada covers how the data is published.

How we decide pass or fail: where the health authority publishes its own result or grade (for example a pass/fail outcome, a letter grade, or a satisfactory/unsatisfactory rating), we use it. Otherwise we look at what the inspector found: an inspection with any higher-risk finding — one the authority flags as critical, or one about food temperatures, hand hygiene, pests, sanitizing, contamination or chemicals — counts as a fail; one with only lower-risk findings (upkeep, paperwork, training) counts as a pass with minor issues. Because some authorities record many small items on every visit, we never fail a premises just for the number of findings. The pass rate is the share of inspected premises whose most recent inspection passed.
