Inspection summary

Black Widow Winery has been inspected 6 times by Interior Health Authority since September 28, 2016. The most recent inspection, on July 23, 2025, found no infractions.

4 of 6 inspections on record found no infractions at all. No inspections are on record from the past 12 months. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Cleaning and sanitizing and Food temperature control.

The last 3 inspections in a row found no infractions. Recent inspections have recorded fewer infractions than earlier ones, so the record is improving.

What these findings mean

Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.

  • Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk

Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.

Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on June 26, 2018. For example: 3 Are food contact surfaces, utensils and equipment washed and sanitized in a manner that removes/prevents contamination?

  • Food temperature controlHigher risk

Bacteria multiply fastest between about 4 °C and 60 °C (40 °F to 140 °F). Inspectors check that cold food stays cold, hot food stays hot, cooked food is cooled quickly, and that staff have accurate thermometers. Temperature problems are one of the most common causes of food poisoning, so these are treated as critical findings.

Recorded once on September 28, 2016. For example: Are proper refrigeration, freezing and thawing procedures followed?

  • Permits, records and postingLower risk

Operating permits, required signage, written procedures and logs. These findings are administrative: the documentation was missing or out of date at the time of inspection.

Recorded 2 times on September 28, 2016. For example: Are written food handling procedures (Food Safety Plan) current and available on site?

  • Food safety training and certificationLower risk

Most jurisdictions require a certified food handler or manager on site, and some require allergen or food-worker training. These findings mean the paperwork or the trained person was missing at the time. They do not by themselves mean food was handled unsafely.

Recorded once on September 28, 2016. For example: Does the operator and appropriate employees hold a valid FOODSAFE certificate?

Black Widow Winery absolutely blew us away! We honestly weren't expecting it to become one of our favorite stops, but from the very first sip, we were hooked. Every single wine we tasted was outstanding. In fact, we kept looking at each other saying, "We want to buy them all!" It's rare to visit a winery where every pour is this consistently good, but Black Widow delivered exactly that. The wines were bold, balanced, and incredibly memorable. The winery has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that lets the wines speak for themselves, and the staff made the experience even better with their friendly service and passion for what they do. We genuinely feel this winery is underrated and deserves so much more attention. If you're planning an Okanagan wine tour, do yourself a favor and don't skip Black Widow. It may not always be the first winery people recommend, but after visiting, we can confidently say it should be. It was one of the biggest surprises of our trip and an easy 5-star experience. We'll definitely be back! My only regret is that I did not buy more bottles of wine!!!

Amazing family business with the best wine we tasted on all region. Warm , clean and cozy place. The father / founder is so enthusiastic and passionate about the wines! We will share some wine with family and friends going back to Vancouver, so they can order online and have it too. Congratulations for the gold medals on the recent wine competition !

It is always nice to stop in at Black Widow winery, such great people and location. Standing out in a sea of wineries is a difficult chore but Dick and his family have done it. All of their wines are very pleasing to my palate, we did purchase 3 cases and will be ordering more as time goes by,

Here is another example of a great BC winery! The vibe is very cool, and you can normally chat with the vintner himself. The wines are a little on the pricey side but well worth the cost. The Reds were our favorites.

Great experience ! We were a group of 4, and did the tasting in the early afternoon. The hostess was funny and knowledgeable about the wine and the local area restaurants and venues. The wines in the tasting are self selected so you can pick what fancies your palate. I tried four reds, and a white. All were full flavored and unique in their characteristics. Sooo good, we bought a couple bottles. Will definitely go back for more.

This place was a really great experience. You are in the area where the wine is made for your tasting. It is different from the others and I ended up buying three types of wine from their Spring/Summer flight. Leslie made the experience unique and the story of the winery is pretty neat. The wine is fantastic, the group I am in loved it too. Picture of the wines attached.

Fantastic boutique winery right off the main road. Cute patio with plenty of seating. We were lucky enough to be the first ones in for the day so we ended up with a private tasting. Great wines and definitely on my list to go back and pick up more wine. Service was excellent!

Had a very nice and enjoyable wine tasting here. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. Tasting cost can be waived if you buy a bottle. Did find one we enjoyed and picked it up. The tasting room has many oak casts sitting in it so has a elegance to me. They do have limited supply so they have had a good year and their supply of wines are almost out. Another month they figured and it would be done for the year. So if are wanting to get in do it sooner that later.

This is our favorite winery. The Hourglass wine is amazing, we also enjoy all the wines they make. It's family run and very personal. We recently did a vertical tasting. It was cool to see the variations, yet still so good.
