Inspection summary

Famous Yan's Restaurant has been inspected 15 times by Interior Health Authority since April 16, 2013. The most recent inspection, on January 30, 2026, recorded 2 infractions.

3 of 15 inspections on record found no infractions at all. In the past 12 months there was 1 inspection with 2 infractions recorded. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Protecting food from contamination, Food temperature control and Handwashing and staff hygiene.

Recent inspections have recorded fewer infractions than earlier ones, so the record is improving.

What these findings mean

Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.

  • Protecting food from contaminationHigher risk

This covers how food is stored, prepared and displayed: raw meat kept away from ready-to-eat food, food covered and stored off the floor, and nothing dripping or splashing into it. Cross-contamination from raw to cooked food is a direct route for salmonella and E. coli.

Recorded 10 times across 10 separate inspections, most recently on January 30, 2026. For example: 5 Are the premises and equipment properly maintained and operated in a sanitary manner (i.e. ongoing maintenance)?

  • Food temperature controlHigher risk

Bacteria multiply fastest between about 4 °C and 60 °C (40 °F to 140 °F). Inspectors check that cold food stays cold, hot food stays hot, cooked food is cooled quickly, and that staff have accurate thermometers. Temperature problems are one of the most common causes of food poisoning, so these are treated as critical findings.

Recorded 8 times across 4 separate inspections, most recently on April 15, 2024. For example: 2 Are proper temperature controls maintained to ensure safe storage and display of foods?

  • Handwashing and staff hygieneHigher risk

Hands are the main way germs like norovirus move from people to food. Inspectors look for stocked, accessible handwashing sinks, staff washing hands when required, hair restraints, and sick employees being kept away from food. Gaps here can spread illness quickly.

Recorded 4 times across 3 separate inspections, most recently on January 30, 2026. For example: 7 Are there handwashing stations available and properly supplied?

  • Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk

Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.

Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on June 16, 2017. For example: 3 - Are equipment, food contact surfaces and utensils washed, sanitized and stored in a manner that removes/prevents contamination?

  • PestsHigher risk

Signs of mice, rats, cockroaches or flies, or gaps and clutter that let them get in or hide. Pests carry bacteria and can contaminate food and surfaces, so evidence of activity is treated seriously and usually triggers a follow-up visit.

Recorded once on April 15, 2024. For example: 2 Are proper pest control measures in place on the premises?

We showed up at Yans last night for some dinner, about 7 or 7:30 with my daughter, her BF, their young daughter and my daughter in law. Had one of the friendliest servers I think I’ve ever had! She truly was top notch. The food was great, and when we were finished, obviously paid the bill and headed out the door. It wasn’t until we were headed out that we realized it was 8:30 and by rights, they’d closed half an hour earlier! Nobody rushing us, everyone super friendly! We felt like assholes when we realized it and the whole staff was so incredibly polite and accommodating throughout. 5 stars are not enough!

Stopped here for dinner during a local tour from Lake Louise going back to downtown Vancouver. We didn’t have to wait long for our food; however, the food wasn't anything special, it was just okay. Overall a little but too oily.

Very average Chinese food—pretty bland really. Part of our meal package for our tour. Dishes brought out to our table without any explanation. Restaurant was dirty, with used plates left on tables and food on the floor. Disappointing experience. The smorgasbord experience was even worse. Dried out food, empty dishes not refilled. Overall the food was not good.

If you eat gluten free you have to stop in! Amazing menu and very friendly staff I feel like I wasted so many chances to stop in as we frequently drive through Salmon Arm and im so happy we stopped in. This is going to become my family's go to place in the future. Also they have some of the best fried rice around!

We absolutely loved our dinner here. So delicious. Huge servings and great service. We had come from out of town, and once it was mentioned, our server even made a point to tell us the best sights to go to see while we were there. I wish we had a Yan's in my town.
