What these findings mean
Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.
Protecting food from contaminationHigher risk
This covers how food is stored, prepared and displayed: raw meat kept away from ready-to-eat food, food covered and stored off the floor, and nothing dripping or splashing into it. Cross-contamination from raw to cooked food is a direct route for salmonella and E. coli.
Recorded once on December 1, 2022. For example:
7 Are foods protected from contamination?
Building, plumbing and upkeepLower risk
Floors, walls and ceilings must be smooth and clean, with working lighting, ventilation, plumbing, hot and cold water, and washrooms. These are rarely an immediate food-safety risk on their own, but persistent problems can lead to pest or sanitation issues.
Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on December 1, 2022. For example:
6 Are the premises designed and equipped to ensure safe food handling?
Equipment and utensilsLower risk
Equipment has to be built from cleanable materials, kept in good repair and stored properly. These findings are mostly about upkeep, like a cracked shelf, a worn gasket or utensils stored the wrong way. They are generally lower risk but show how well the kitchen is maintained.
Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on April 24, 2017. For example:
4 - Are the premises, equipment and utensils designed and maintained to ensure safe and sanitary food handling?

Mother at 90 and myself live together in our own home very thankful. We both have witnessed a few instances that are concerning that should never happen. Honestly most care aid nurses have no respect for seniors who can't help themselves. Examples: A family visiting their mother for Mother's Day brought bouquet flowers. The day we went to visit weeks later, as I enter her room, flowers dead in the vase in her room, untouched. She asked me to please remove them immediately. We both went to visit her the other day during their lunch. We both witnessed food spoonfulls given to her quickly, without giving her a chance to chew properly. Careaid offered ice cream sandwiches to all before main meal was completed that's nice but this particular senior had chocolate ice cream covering her entire chin area while shoving her meal into her mouth. Another senior wheelchair bound called for care aid, but didn't hear her the careaid continued her work in the kitchen. As friendly as I am, I approached her asking what she needed or wanted. All she wanted " Someone to talk with" I spent 10 min comforting her. She thanked me telling me I have high spirits making her day. It really breaks our heart to see there isn't any respect whatsoever in this facility. Yes it's clean quiet television on, BUT PEOPLE NEED PEOPLE.

My mother became a resident in long term care at Heritage Square 2 years ago and she absolutely loves it there! The manager is wonderful as are the office staff, nurses, recreation organizers and care aides. My mother has a lovely room with adjoining bathroom and the rooms at Heritage Square are much larger than at all the other residences in Vernon (and we checked every single one of them before deciding.) She has a big TV on a 5 foot stand, floor to ceiling bookcase, table, recliner, 2 dressers , an additional chair and remaining space for both her walker and wheelchair. Her room is decorated to be like a garden with artificial plants, pictures and photographs,. And there is a flowered duvet on her bed. When she first went into residence after the initial 3 months she asked if she could stay and if she got to keep her room! And when we take her out she is happy to return and says, "'I'm home!" She always praises the care aides for their kindness and they always take time to talk with her. Heritage Square also goes out of their way to keep us updated and informed. Since the pandemic Heritage Square has done everything possible to make things the best they can possibly be for their residents. I am not alone in expressing my appreciation to them for this as I have spoken to the children of other residents who are also very thankful for their efforts. In fact during mother's stay, a lady was transferred to Heritage Square temporarily as space was sought for her elsewhere. However after 2 months she expressed that she wanted to stay and was overjoyed when this was allowed! I would like those reading this review to know that I visit mother 2x a week during this pandemic and saw her 3x a week before the restrictions, so I have come to know Heritage Square very well. Many times I tell friends how fortunate we feel to have mother settled in such a loving place.

THIS HOME WAS GOOD AT ONE TIME HOWEVER IT NO LONGER IN MY OPINION IS FIT TO OPERATE. i HAVE SEEN RAT /MOUSE BOXES AROUND THE HOME ESPECIALLY IS THE ONE BY THE FRIDGE IN THE KITCHEN. THE RESIDENTS ARE NOW SLEEPING ON HARD GREEN PLASTIC COVERED FOAM WHICH IS SO HARD IT WOULD CRIPPLE ME. UNLESS THE FAMILY BUYS FOAM OR GEL COVERINGS THERE IS NOT EVEN A MATTRESS COVER ISSUED. SOME RESIDENTS APPEAR DRUGGED AND ARE PUT TO BED AS EARLY AS 530 PM. i HAVE WITNESSED RESIDENTS TREATED WITH DISDAIN , IMPATIENCE, AND RUDENESS BORDERING ON ABUSE, RESIDENTS LAY IN THEIR BEDS SCREAMING FOR HELP AND IT IS ASSUMED THEY ARE MERELY SEEKING ATTENTION OR WANTING TO GO TO THE BATHROOM (WHICH IS NOT ALLOWED AFTER THEY ARE IN BED IF THEY ARE NOT INDEPENDENTLY MOBILE) i HAVE ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS WITNESSED ONE STAFF MEMBER IN PARTICULAR SAY SHUT UP AND MERELY CLOSE THE RESIDENTS DOOR CHECKING NOTHING. SHE THEN TELLS EVERYONE WHO WILL LISTEN HOW LITTLE TIME SHE HAS AND THEN SIT FOR TWO HOURS PLAYING ON HER I PHONE SELLING JEWLERY. PLEASE LOOK ELSEWHERE ga
