- 03. Are facility-specific written procedures established to adequately describe safe and sanitary practices?
- Written procedures were not prepared. Templates provided during the inspection. Templates will be reviewed upon re-inspection.
- 06. Do operators and personal services workers comply with the Personal Services Regulation and Standards and do they have the skills and knowledge to perform their duties in a safe and sanitary manner?
- Operators were unfamiliar with Personal Services Standards and Regulations. PHI provided basic education on equipment classification and level of disinfection required for each. A copy of the standards will be sent via email.
- 08. Is hand hygiene performed by the personal services worker when required, in a proper manner and are provisions available to perform hand hygiene?
- 1. No paper towel is available in the washroom. Only reusable towels are available which are hanging on a rack beside the toilet. Please purchase disposable paper towels and ensure they are used by staff and clients for hand drying.2. Two bottles of hand sanitizer at the front desk were expired in 2022 and 2023. Please purchase new hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol and including an NPN or DIN on the label.
- 10. Is cleansing and antisepsis of skin and mucous membrane performed in accordance to written procedures and are suitable products being used?
- No cleansers for nail services or waxing observed at their respective stations.
- 11. Is post-service care provided by personal service workers following any personal service or accident where a client's skin or mucous membrane is cut or punctured during a personal service, or when energy-emitting equipment is used?
- Facility does not have supplies for wound care in the event of an accidental puncture.
- 15. Is reusable equipment handled and stored properly (Critical)?
- Clean and dirty nail equipment was not adequately separated.Please ensure dirty and clean nail equipment are clearly separated.
- 16. Is reusable equipment handled and stored properly (Non-Critical)?
- Reusable towel on the waxing bed was visibly dirty.Laundry available on site.
- 20. Is reusable equipment disinfected properly?
- 1. Semi-critical nail equipment such as trimmers were being disinfected with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol is not an approved disinfectant. Education provided to operator on appropriate high-level disinfectants.Semi-critical equipment such as nail trimmers, nippers and cuticle pushers must be washed with warm soap and water, allowed to air dry, then submerged in high-level disinfectant. Some high-level disinfectants may also require a rinse step after disinfection. Manufacturer's instructions must be followed at all times.If using a high-level disinfectant with a re-use period, the disinfectant must be tested daily with appropriate test strips and the results must be recorded. A high-level disinfection log template was provided during the inspection.2. The barbicide container for combs was only half full during the inspection and was a green color, potentially indicating it needs to be changed out. The facility did not have any new barbicide on site. If using barbicide, the combs must be fully submerged in the barbicide. 3. The re-circulating foot bath is not being adequately disinfected. Sani-tabs and a low-level disinfectant spray were available on site. A product that can be circulated through the system and remove any biofilms must be used to disinfect the basins. The inside of the jet covers for the working foot baths also had a buildup of grime and minerals.
- 26. Are cosmetic products appropriate for their intended use and being handled properly?
- Spray bottles containing water were unlabeled. A squeeze bottle containing 70% alcohol was labeled during the inspection. All cosmetic products must be labeled.
- 27. Is the facility maintained in a visibly clean state and are environmental surfaces cleaned and disinfected properly?
- 1. Facility has a build up of hair, dirt and other debris on the floors throughout the facility. The facility requires a thorough deep-cleaning.2. Wax pot in the waxing room has a large amount of wax spilled around the exterior.3. The inside of the UV nail light stations have a build up of grime and debris.
- 29. Is the facility properly constructed and maintained to allow for the safe and sanitary provision of personal services (Non-Critical)?
- Facility is cluttered with equipment the operators stated is broken or no longer used. All equipment that is not being used for service should be removed from the facility.
- 30. Is the reprocessing area of a personal service facility that uses reusable equipment properly designed, managed and maintained to ensure the safety of clients?
- 1. Semi-critical nail equipment was being cleaned in the washroom.Semi-critical equipment cannot be cleaned in a room containing a toilet.2. One of the hair sinks can be used for cleaning and reprocessing semi-critical equipment, but neither of them have adequate space for reprocessing. A shelf, trolley or other suitable surface must be installed to provide adequate space for reprocessing of equipment.
