    • 02. Has the operator notified the RHA of the existence of a personal service business, including contact and location information, as well as all personal services currently offered or new personal services that will be offered for facilities and/or special events?
      • Operator had not submitted the Personal Service Notification to the Alberta Health Services.PSN was submitted during the inspection, as directed by the PHI.
    • 03. Are facility-specific written procedures established to adequately describe safe and sanitary practices?
      • Facility had not established the facility-specific written procedures for the services offered at the facility.Discussed the written procedures with the operator.Following templates for written procedures were provided during the inspection.1)Client care in case of accidental skin care and punctures.2)Skin cleansing procedures
    • 14. Is single-use or uncleanable equipment being used as intended (Non-Critical)?
      • It was observed during the inspection that the re-usable small brushes were visibly dirty. Please note that Make-up brushes, shaving brushes, and nail polish brushes are generally considered Porous or uncleanable, however they can be reused, If they are maintained in visibly clean condition and disinfected.Antiseptic products (such as hydrogen peroxide, 70% alcohol or detergent/soap) can be used for cleaning/disinfection.
    • 15. Is reusable equipment handled and stored properly (Critical)?
      • It was observed that dirty pedicure tools were not stored and handled appropriately.Dirty equipment must be stored separate from clean equipment.The used equipment must be placed in the container/try specific for dirty tools and brought into the tools re-processing area to ensure proper cleaning and disinfection.
    • 20. Is reusable equipment disinfected properly?
      • During the inspection it was observed that facility was providing the services involving the semi-critical equipment.However the High-Level Disinfectant was not available.Test strips and testing logs were not available.Operator and staff were not aware of the requirements of High Level Disinfectant for reusable semi-critical equipment.Tools were cleaned with Alcohol.Old-fashioned sterilization cabinet was being used.Education and guidance was provided to the operator and staff.Operator called the supplier during the inspection and following corrections were made during the inspection.1)High Level Disinfectant Pre-empt CS-20 was brought in.2)Test strips AHP7 for testing of Pre-empt CS20 was brought in.3)Timer for ensuring the contact time was set for 20 mins.4)Available container was being used for soaking of the tools.5)Testing logs were provided and filled during the inspection.Please make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the use of HLD.
    • 20. Is reusable equipment disinfected properly?
      • Facility did not have a container allowing the full immersion of semi-critical tools.During the inspection an available dish was being used.Please make sure to obtain a container that allows the full-immersion of tools.
    • 20. Is reusable equipment disinfected properly?
      • It was observed that alcohol was being used to clean the environmental surfaces.Low Level Disinfectant Mr.Clean was used for floors only.Pre-empt RTU was expired.Discussed with operator to use the at least Low Level Disinfectant for cleaning of environmental surfaces.Pre-empt RTU is recommended for pedicure basins.This violation was corrected during the inspection.
    • 24. Are waste sharps disposed of properly?
      • Puncture resistant sharps container was not present to dispose of the single use sharp blades.Sharps were discarded in the empty bottle and disposed of with regular waste.Facility require a puncture-resistant sharps container with tight fitting lid.Sharps are considered bio-hazard and must be disposed of in appropriate manner. Options available include an exchange of full sharps containers with pharmacies or hospitals, or the retention of a biomedical waste removal company.
    • 26. Are cosmetic products appropriate for their intended use and being handled properly?
      • Some of the cosmetic products in the client service carts were expired.The cosmetic bottles in the waxing area were dirty and need cleaning.Operator confirmed that staff would be going through the cosmetic products and will make sure to discard the expired products and proceed with cleaning, as discussed.
    • 30. Is the reprocessing area of a personal service facility that uses reusable equipment properly designed, managed and maintained to ensure the safety of clients?
      • 1)Please make sure to clean the reprocessing area, remove extra items from the adjacent shelves and make sure that proper working surface for handling, disinfection, drying and storage of equipment is available to prevent cross-contamination.2) The wall behind the reprocessing sink was in disrepair. The enamel paint was peeling off.Operator discussed the options to repair the wall.
    • 33. Are general nuisance conditions, other than those noted in other violations, being prevented at this personal services facility (Non-Critical)?
      • It was observed that chemical spray bottles and some of the cosmetic bottles were not properly labelled.Please label the bottles to avoid cross-contamination.
