Inspection summary
Historic Hat Creek Ranch has been inspected 3 times by Interior Health Authority since July 2, 2024. The most recent inspection, on May 19, 2026, recorded 7 infractions.
None of the 3 inspections on record were free of infractions. In the past 12 months there was 1 inspection with 7 infractions recorded. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Protecting food from contamination, Cleaning and sanitizing and Handwashing and staff hygiene.
What these findings mean
Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.
Protecting food from contaminationHigher risk
This covers how food is stored, prepared and displayed: raw meat kept away from ready-to-eat food, food covered and stored off the floor, and nothing dripping or splashing into it. Cross-contamination from raw to cooked food is a direct route for salmonella and E. coli.
Recorded 3 times across 3 separate inspections, most recently on May 19, 2026. For example:
5 Are the premises and equipment properly maintained and operated in a sanitary manner (i.e. ongoing maintenance)?
Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk
Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.
Recorded once on May 19, 2026. For example:
3 Are food contact surfaces, utensils and equipment washed and sanitized in a manner that removes/prevents contamination?
Handwashing and staff hygieneHigher risk
Hands are the main way germs like norovirus move from people to food. Inspectors look for stocked, accessible handwashing sinks, staff washing hands when required, hair restraints, and sick employees being kept away from food. Gaps here can spread illness quickly.
Recorded once on May 19, 2026. For example:
7 Are there handwashing stations available and properly supplied?
PestsHigher risk
Signs of mice, rats, cockroaches or flies, or gaps and clutter that let them get in or hide. Pests carry bacteria and can contaminate food and surfaces, so evidence of activity is treated seriously and usually triggers a follow-up visit.
Recorded once on April 2, 2025. For example:
2 Are proper pest control measures in place on the premises?
Permits, records and postingLower risk
Operating permits, required signage, written procedures and logs. These findings are administrative: the documentation was missing or out of date at the time of inspection.
Recorded 2 times on May 19, 2026. For example:
3 Are written food handling procedures (Food Safety Plan) current and available on site?

3 inspections
- Monitoring
7 infractions
- F2.1 Does the facility have proper monitoring supplies?
- Observation(s): Fridges/freezers upstairs do not all have thermometers. No thermometer available for monitoring temperature of final rinse cycle in dishwasher. Corrective Action: Acquire and equip all fridges and freezers with a thermometer. Acquire a waterproof thermometer for monitoring temperature of final rinse in dishwasher.
- F2.3 Are food contact surfaces, utensils and equipment washed and sanitized in a manner that removes/prevents contamination?
- Observation(s): Mechanical dishwasher reached only 67.5°C after several cycles. This does not meet the minimum of 71°C at plate for high temp dishwashers. Corrective Action: Have the dishwasher serviced so that the final rinse cycle is a minimum of 71°C at plate. Until the dishwasher is repaired, all dishes must be sanitized after washing, in a solution of sanitizer of adequate concentration, and air dried.
- F2.3A Mechanical dishwasher/glasswasher must provide sufficient washing and sanitizing action to remove contamination.
- F2.5 Are the premises and equipment properly maintained and operated in a sanitary manner (i.e. ongoing maintenance)?
- Observation(s): • REPEAT INFRACTION: Lights in basement kitchen do not have shatterproof covers. This poses a risk of possible chemical and physical contamination of food and equipment. • Areas under equipment and in hard to reach areas of the upstairs kitchen have a build up of grease and food debris. • Staff personal items observed stored on food contact surfaces. Items were removed promptly when requested (CDI) Corrective Action: • Have the light covers affixed with covers, or cover the light bulbs with shatterproof sheaths which are available commercially for fluorescent tubes. • Deep clean under all equipment and in hard to reach areas of the kitchen. Add this to the sanitation plan to prevent build up in the future.
- F2.5B The premises must be properly constructed and maintained in good, clean and sanitary condition.
- F2.5J Artificial lighting must have shatterproof covers or shatterproof bulbs.
- F2.5K Storage of equipment, food contact surfaces and utensils must prevent contamination.
- F2.6 Are the premises designed and equipped to ensure safe food handling?
- Observation(s): Dry goods including pancake mix, scone mix, salt, and sugar stored in non-food grade bins in basement kitchen. Scoops stored inside bin with food. Corrective Action: Transfer the food to food safe bins, or place dry goods inside original bags/packaging inside the bins. Store the scoops outside of the bins on a clean surface or container.
- F2.6B All food contact surfaces must be constructed from materials that are suited for their intended purpose, durable and free from any noxious (harmful) or toxic substance.
- F2.7 Are there handwashing stations available and properly supplied?
- Observation(s): Paper towel dispenser in down stairs kitchen is empty. Corrective Action: Refill the paper towel dispenser
- F2.7C Handwashing station must be supplied with single-service product for drying hands.
- F3.3 Are written food handling procedures (Food Safety Plan) current and available on site?
- Observation(s): • Temperature logs are not maintained • Food Safety Plan not available on site and operator unsure where to find it. Corrective Action: • Monitor and record temperature of all cold and hot holding units daily. Send the next month records to the EHO • Locate the Food Safety Plan and ensure a copy is kept on site.
- F3.4 Are written sanitation procedures (Sanitation Plan) current and available on site?
- Observation(s): • Sanitation logs are not maintained • Sanitation Plan not available on site and operator unsure where to find it. Corrective Action: • Monitor and record concentration of sanitizing solution, and temperature of final rinse cycle in dishwasher daily. Template provided. Send the next month records to the EHO. • Locate the Sanitation Plan and ensure a copy is kept on site.
- F2.1 Does the facility have proper monitoring supplies?
- Monitoring
2 infractions
- F2.2 Are proper pest control measures in place on the premises?
- Observation(s): • Some holes and gaps where observed in the lower basement kitchen area, these will be required to be sealed or closed to ensure that pest entry into the facility is prevented. Other areas were noted as sealed. • Operator had pest control traps set up.
- F2.2B The premises must be protected against entry of pests.
- F2.5 Are the premises and equipment properly maintained and operated in a sanitary manner (i.e. ongoing maintenance)?
- Observation(s): Observed lights without shatterproof covers in the lower basement kitchen area. This poses a risk of possible chemical and physical contamination of food and equipment. These lights either need shatterproof covers/sleeves or need to be shatterproof lights (e.g. some LED lights). This previously corrected and some coves were observed to be removed again. Note not much food handling occurring in the basement kitchen. Corrective Actions • Ensure that there are covers back on the lights or change to shatterproof lights.
- F2.5J Artificial lighting must have shatterproof covers or shatterproof bulbs.

We didn't stay here, but it is our second time having lunch at the restaurant! The food is excellent! We needed lunch on our way through town, and we were the only guests in the restaurant on a beautiful sunny, Monday afternoon. Both the server and the cook were delightful. The setting is lovely, but we didn't have time to check out any of the historic ranch itself. Looks very worthwhile if you have the time!

We didn't stay in any rooms as it was fire season and the campground was hosting wildfire workers. Really cool place to wander around, it was smokey but we still enjoyed the blacksmith demonstration the fella there was knowledgeable and friendly we chatted there for a good 20 mins. A few of the things were closed but we still tried out the gem finder station found a few gems but we put them back in the trough.

We visited the ranch itself. It was a really nice open-air museum and really nice to see how things were so long ago. The staff was really friendly and helpful and our 4 year old had a blast searching for gold and getting a nail made by the blacksmith

We visited this beautiful little original Stage Coach stop over. When our daughter was little. We came from Lilloet.way. Loved our visit..

I'm sure this is a lovely spot most of the time, but our experience was not so much. We were traveling from Alberta to Vancouver and had prebooked spot 5 about a week prior to our trip. We arrived (after alot of delays resulting in 12 hours of travel time) at 10 pm BC time, to find that 1) there was an "electronic music festival" (aka a Rave) taking place on the grounds (true kudos to the organizers of that event , it was an amazingly considerate spot all in all ) and 2 ) there was someone else in the spot I had booked and electronically checked into. The organizer of the event that we spoke to (as there was no one available from the ranch at that time) confirmed that the occupant in our spot was booked in for the entire weekend event. I'm not sure if Hat Creek forgot to block off the weekend on campspot and that is why we were able to overlap the bookings, but it was an unfortunately restless night for the adults in our party as we had no where else to go. We got up in the morning and left... with that sort of system glitch, we won't be back. I would caution anyone considering booking to actually call hat creek and book through them directly before spending the $60 on potentially no sleep Again, kudos to the organizers of the event, it was an awesome location and looked/sounded like it was a success
