    • 16. Is the facility free of unapproved animals, vermin and/or insects (unless noted elsewhere), and maintained to prevent the entry or harbourage of pests?
      • Downstairs door leading to the exterior has a hole to accommodate wires/piping. A covering has been placed over the larger hole, leaving smaller holes but that would still allow mice to enter.Mouse traps have been placed on either side of the door. Pest control inspections are being conducted monthly and records were available.It was reported that one mouse was discovered dead in the facility since the previous inspection. No evidence of mouse activity was noted during inspection.Continue to monitor for pests.

      • Downstairs door leading to the exterior has a hole to accommodate wires/piping. A covering has been placed over the larger hole, leaving smaller holes but that would still allow mice to enter.It is now anticipated that the project may be completed by fall 2025.Mouse traps have been placed on either side of the door. Pest control inspections are being conducted monthly and records were available.Continue to monitor for pests.

      • One bottle of quat sanitizer was not labeled.Ensure all chemical bottles are labeled to indicate contents.Bottle was removed from service and replaced with a labeled bottle during inspection.

      • The client accessible kitchen in long term care did not have food grade sanitizer available.Ensure food grade sanitizer is available to sanitize food contact surfaces:- 100-200 ppm chlorine bleach, or- 200-400 ppm quats.Test strips for the type of sanitizer in use must be present and used to verify sanitizer concentration.

    • 10. Are food temperatures during storage and processing being controlled to maximize food safety?
      • A container of margarine and single serve creamers were sitting on the counter at room temperature. Items were left over from breakfast but had not been put away after breakfast service.High risk food items can only be left at ambient temperature for a maximum of 2 hours, after which they must be discarded. Time must be tracked in some way.It is recommended to bring out small amounts and replenish as necessary.Creamers were discarded and margarine placed into the cooler during inspection.

      • Two ceiling tiles outside the kitchen area in the hallway were stained as a result of water damage. One tile was located just outside the women's washroom and the other just inside the women's washroom.It was reported that the dishwasher vent malfunctioned, closing the vent which resulted in condensation building up on the pipes in the ceiling. The issue was fixed. However, the design of the ceiling pipes promotes ongoing condensation build up.It is recommended the damaged tiles be replaced to monitor for new damage.Investigate options to permanently fix the condensation issue. If a permanent fix is not possible, determine potential mitigation strategies.

    • 08. Do food handlers ensure that food is protected from contamination (unless noted elsewhere)(Non-Critical)?
      • A single use cup was found in a bulk flour bin for use as a scoop.Do not use single use items for scoops. Scoops must be durable, washable, and have a handle. Best practice is to store scoops outside of the bin; if left in the food product, the handle of the scoop must not contact the food.Single use cup was discarded during inspection.

      • Downstairs door leading to the exterior has a hole to accommodate wires/piping.       • A Smuckers caramel sauce specifying "refrigerate after opening" was found open at room temperature.Ensure label directions for food storage are followed.Sauce had been out for service and was moved back to the cooler during inspection.
    • 16. Is the facility free of unapproved animals, vermin and/or insects (unless noted elsewhere), and maintained to prevent the entry or harbourage of pests?
      • Downstairs door leading to the exterior has a hole to accommodate wires/piping. A covering has been placed over the larger hole, leaving smaller holes but that would still allow mice to enter.The generator project is currently on hold with no timeline for completion.Mouse traps have been placed on either side of the door. Pest control inspections are being conducted monthly and records were available.Continue to monitor for pests.

      • One bottle of quat sanitizer measured <100 ppm.Bottle was refilled with 200 ppm quat sanitizer.
    • 08. Do food handlers ensure that food is protected from contamination (unless noted elsewhere)(Non-Critical)?
      • Two boxes of food were on the floor in the walk in freezer.Boxes were placed on milk crates during inspection.Ensure all food is stored at least 6 inches off the floor.
    • 16. Is the facility free of unapproved animals, vermin and/or insects (unless noted elsewhere), and maintained to prevent the entry or harbourage of pests?
      • Downstairs door leading to the exterior has a large hole to accommodate wires/piping. There are large gaps present which may lead to pests (eg mice).Ensure the gaps are sealed to prevent entry by pests.Until the entrance point can be sealed, place additional mouse traps in the area.Maintenance staff stated the electrical issues will be resolved in June/July and the exterior door replaced.

    • 04. Does the operator use approved methods for cleaning and sanitizing equipment, utensils, and surfaces?
      • 1. Quat sanitizer in spray bottles throughout the kitchen measured 100 ppm.Quat sanitizer must be maintained at 200-400 ppm.Staff are filling the bottles in the evening for use the next day.Fill the bottles in the morning. Test the bottles around noon/1 pm and if the concentration is less than 200 ppm, re-fill.Bottles were re-filled with 200 ppm of quat sanitizer during inspection.2. Used cleaning cloths were observed around the kitchen on various surfaces.Once used, cleaning cloths must either be stored in a sanitizer solution or sent for washing. Cloths cannot be left where they may be re-used unless they are in a sanitizer solution.Cloths were placed in a bucket to be washed during inspection.
