Inspection summary

Freshies Fernie Cafe has been inspected 6 times by Interior Health Authority since May 10, 2022. The most recent inspection, on July 14, 2026, found no infractions.

3 of 6 inspections on record found no infractions at all. In the past 12 months there was 1 inspection with 0 infractions recorded. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Cleaning and sanitizing, Food temperature control and Protecting food from contamination.

The number of infractions per inspection has stayed roughly the same over time.

What these findings mean

Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.

  • Cleaning and sanitizingHigher risk

Anything that touches food, such as cutting boards, dishes and utensils, must be washed, rinsed and sanitized. Inspectors check dishwasher temperatures, sanitizer strength and how wiping cloths are stored. Poor sanitizing lets bacteria survive from one use to the next.

Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on February 27, 2025. For example: 3 Are food contact surfaces, utensils and equipment washed and sanitized in a manner that removes/prevents contamination?

  • Food temperature controlHigher risk

Bacteria multiply fastest between about 4 °C and 60 °C (40 °F to 140 °F). Inspectors check that cold food stays cold, hot food stays hot, cooked food is cooled quickly, and that staff have accurate thermometers. Temperature problems are one of the most common causes of food poisoning, so these are treated as critical findings.

Recorded once on July 12, 2023. For example: 2 Are proper temperature controls maintained to ensure safe storage and display of foods?

  • Protecting food from contaminationHigher risk

This covers how food is stored, prepared and displayed: raw meat kept away from ready-to-eat food, food covered and stored off the floor, and nothing dripping or splashing into it. Cross-contamination from raw to cooked food is a direct route for salmonella and E. coli.

Recorded once on July 12, 2023. For example: 7 Are foods protected from contamination?

  • Permits, records and postingLower risk

Operating permits, required signage, written procedures and logs. These findings are administrative: the documentation was missing or out of date at the time of inspection.

Recorded 2 times on February 27, 2025. For example: 3 Are written food handling procedures (Food Safety Plan) current and available on site?

  • Other findingsLower risk

Findings that do not fit the categories above, such as follow-ups that confirm an earlier violation was corrected, or requirements specific to this type of facility.

Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on March 13, 2024. For example: 1 Does the facility have proper monitoring supplies?

We stopped in on a weeknight after a long day of driving around looking at the mountains and were glad we did, the vibe inside is warm and relaxed without feeling rushed. My husband got the acai bowl and I had a smoothie with fresh ginger, both were generous portions and tasted like real fruit, not syrup. The girl behind the counter was patient with all our questions about the menu and even suggested a couple of local spots worth seeing the next day. Parking right out front made it an easy stop for two old timers who don't move as fast as we used to, and we'll definitely swing by again next time we're in Fernie.

A gem in Fernie! We were only there for the night and were disappointed with some of the service we had at other businesses. Not here!. The staff were sweet, the coffee good and the dietary options were appreciated. A lot of GF foods and the patio with the sound of the trains going by just added to the atmosphere. And thank you for being pet friendly 😊 ❤️

This cozy little coffee shop is a gem. The cappuccino is easily the best I’ve had in years—perfectly balanced! The London Fog is just as impressive. Perfect place to catching up with a friend or just enjoying a quiet moment alone. Definitely a spot worth coming back to 🌼

Very busy little place. The home made sausage roll was fantastic. Not a bad price and a welcome break. First time of having London Fog Tea and, I love it. Thank you.

A cute place to stop in for breakfast. Indoor and outdoor seating available. I did love getting to eat outdoors on the spacious patio. The food was delicious, especially the scones! We appreciated that they had several gluten free options and lactose free options. Service was friendly. Only thing I would recommend for the establishment is to have written details about the food, sandwiches, etc. as many of us took long to order only because we had to wait to ask what was in the dishes. Other than that, definitely recommend stopping in! 😊
