- 03. Are clients at this facility being protected from hazards (Critical)?
- 1. In the kindergarten room it was observed that two metal bars are protruding from bottom of the windows, appearing to be window handle knobs with handle removed/missing. These may pose a safety hazard to children playing around. 2. A shelf with sharp edges was observed in the basement room used by children aged 3 to 4 years. The sharp edges at the height of kids' head/eyes pose a potential injury hazard to children. 3. A shelf with a broken metal piece at the top was observed in the basement room used by children aged 3 to 4 years. The damaged metal creates a potential pinch, cut, and finger-entrapment hazard for children. Ensure the 1. Protruding bars are removed or adequately covered/protected to prevent injury.2. Shelf edges are padded/protected or replace the table with child-safe furniture to prevent injuries.3. Metal piece is removed or adequately covered to prevent injury.

- A heavy stone was found inside a cabinet in the kindergarten room. The manager advised that the stone is used as a painting activity for children. However, the stone poses a potential injury risk if dropped on a child's hand or foot. Upon discussion with the manager, the stone was removed from the room to eliminate the hazard.

- The disinfectant solution concentration was found to be excessively high. Upon discussion with staff, it was determined that the correct amount of bleach was not being measured when preparing the solution. The manager was provided guidance on accurately measuring and diluting bleach to ensure the disinfectant solution is prepared at the required concentration.

- A broken floor tile was observed in the basement room, used by children aged 3 to 4 years, which may hinder effective cleaning and maintenance. Ensure the floor tile is repaired or replaced to provide a smooth, safe, and easily cleanable surface.

- A chair with broken edges was found in the basement room used by children aged 3 to 4 years. The damaged/sharp edges pose a potential injury hazard to children. The chair was removed from the facility.

- An Ice hockey table in the basement room used by children aged 3 to 4 years was observed to have scratches on its surface, making it difficult to properly clean and maintain. Ensure that surface and edges are repaired and painted/refinished with a smooth coating to facilitate effective cleaning and sanitation.

- A mattress in the Toddler Room was ripped.*Staff removed the mattress from the classroom.**Ensure all surfaces in the facility are smooth, safe, and easily cleanable for effective cleaning and disinfecting.

- Mouse droppings were found near the back exit door in the basement. A hole in the wall was also observed near the right bottom of the door, which may serve as a potential entry point for mice.Ensure to 1. Clean and sanitize the area where mouse droppings were found.2. Seal/cover the hole in the wall to prevent further rodent entry.3. Engage a pest management company to inspect the facility, address rodent activity and seal potential entry points.

Ice build-up was observed in the refrigerator in the toddler/baby classroom.Please defrost and ensure the refrigerator is in good working condition.

- Several rooms in the facility, particularly the food closet and the downstairs storage room, are highly congested with items. It is difficult to maneuver in, fully observe for pests, and clean these areas.REQUIREMENT: The daycare centre must construct more storage space to store items. If there is no further room inside, it is suggested to obtain a storage shed for outside.
