- 401 - Critical Adequate handwashing stations not available for employees [s. 21(4)]
- Observation: Inadequate facilities provided for hand washing; only one hand wash station is dedicated for all of Club Demonstation Services (CDS) staff at the back of the warehouse. Public Health Significance - Hand washing is an important practice to ensure food are protected from cross contamination from other previously handled foods or contact surfaces. It is unlikely staff will follow CDS' hand hygiene protocols if they have to walk across the warehouse (approximately 20-100 metres depending on the stall location) in order to wash their hands.
- Corrective Action: Hand wash stations stocked with soap and paper towel in dispensers, as well as potable water, must be provided to facilitate proper hand washing at sampling stations that process potentially hazard foods (e.g., cooking raw proteins).
- 402 - Critical Employee does not wash hands properly or at adequate frequency [s. 21(3)]
- Observation: Observed a staff member used their cellphone during food handling and then placed the phone into the food cart drawer without replacing their gloves. CDS supervisor stated they have hand hygiene protocols in place for staff, as well as the prohibition of cellphone use at sampling areas. Public Health Significance - Improper hand hygiene can lead to cross-contamination and foodborne illness.
- Corrective Action: Ensure staff remove gloves and perform handwashing after touching personal items ( e.g. cellphones) and before resuming food handling. Reinforce hand hygiene policy with staff as well as the prohibition of cellphone use in food preparation and sampling areas.
