202 - 10343 Jasper Avenue NW Edmonton AB T5J 1Y5 · Personal Services

Inspection summary

Tattoo Apothecary has been inspected 4 times by Alberta Health Services (Environmental Public Health) since October 23, 2023. The most recent inspection, on August 5, 2026, found no infractions.

3 of 4 inspections on record found no infractions at all. In the past 12 months there were 2 inspections with 2 infractions recorded. All recorded findings relate to upkeep, equipment or paperwork rather than direct infection-control risks to clients.

Recent inspections have recorded more infractions than earlier ones, so it is worth reading the latest reports closely.

What these findings mean

Health authorities word their findings differently, so we group them by what they mean for clients. In personal service settings like salons, spas and tattoo studios, higher-risk findings are the ones that could spread infection from one client to the next, through broken skin, blood or instruments that were not properly cleaned and sterilized.

  • Permits, records and postingLower risk

Operating permits, client records, sterilization logs and required signage. Client records matter because they let health officials contact people if an infection is linked to the business.

Recorded once on August 4, 2026. For example: Are facility-specific written procedures established to adequately describe safe and sanitary practices?

  • Other findingsLower risk

Findings that do not fit the categories above, such as follow-ups that confirm an earlier violation was corrected, or requirements specific to this type of facility.

Recorded once on August 4, 2026. For example: Are cosmetic products appropriate for their intended use and being handled properly?

    • 03. Are facility-specific written procedures established to adequately describe safe and sanitary practices?
      • Detailed facility-specific written procedures were not available at the time of inspection describing relevant safe and sanitary practices including skin cleansing and antisepsis, handling accidental skin cuts or punctures, and post-service care by the operator. Through discussion, the operator did mention that written procedures had been previously established but were not available at the time of inspection. The PHI trainee offered written templates for these procedures onsite, as well as education on how to fill out and maintain the procedures. Please ensure to utilize these written procedures to maintain consistency with all operators at the facility with regards to sanitary practices such as skin cleansing, taking care of accidental cuts, and post-service care performed by the operator as part of the personal service. Please send me filled-out written procedures by the following week (August 11th, 2026).
    • 26. Are cosmetic products appropriate for their intended use and being handled properly?
      • Cosmetic products, including tattoo inks, stencil creams, and other similar products were well-labelled, were used appropriately, and were handled by following manufacturer's instructions for use with one exception: a stencil cream ('The Good Stencil Solution') was found to be expired since September, 2024. After explaining the public health significance of this to the operator, they made sure to set aside the product so that it would not be used in the future. Please ensure that all products used are not expired and are used according to the manufacturer's intended instructions for use. This is especially important because expired products can become contaminated or else break down over time after expiring, and stencil cream is typically applied after antisepsis, making this all the more important.Ink caps were well-supplied and available for tattoo inks to be portioned into in order to protect the bulk supply, and this was effectively demonstrated on-site by the operator. Sterile water-only was used to dilute any tattoo inks when this was necessary.
