Inspection summary

Hillside Petro Canada has been inspected 11 times by Interior Health Authority since April 24, 2013. The most recent inspection, on February 24, 2025, found no infractions.

6 of 11 inspections on record found no infractions at all. No inspections are on record from the past 12 months. The higher-risk findings here relate to: Food temperature control, Protecting food from contamination and Handwashing and staff hygiene.

The last 2 inspections in a row found no infractions. The number of infractions per inspection has stayed roughly the same over time.

What these findings mean

Health authorities word their violations differently, so we group them by what they mean for food safety. Higher-risk findings are the ones inspectors treat as critical, because they can directly make someone sick.

  • Food temperature controlHigher risk

Bacteria multiply fastest between about 4 °C and 60 °C (40 °F to 140 °F). Inspectors check that cold food stays cold, hot food stays hot, cooked food is cooled quickly, and that staff have accurate thermometers. Temperature problems are one of the most common causes of food poisoning, so these are treated as critical findings.

Recorded once on May 9, 2023. For example: 2 Are proper temperature controls maintained to ensure safe storage and display of foods?

  • Protecting food from contaminationHigher risk

This covers how food is stored, prepared and displayed: raw meat kept away from ready-to-eat food, food covered and stored off the floor, and nothing dripping or splashing into it. Cross-contamination from raw to cooked food is a direct route for salmonella and E. coli.

Recorded once on May 5, 2021. For example: 5 Are the premises and equipment properly maintained and operated in a sanitary manner (i.e. ongoing maintenance)?

  • Handwashing and staff hygieneHigher risk

Hands are the main way germs like norovirus move from people to food. Inspectors look for stocked, accessible handwashing sinks, staff washing hands when required, hair restraints, and sick employees being kept away from food. Gaps here can spread illness quickly.

Recorded once on April 25, 2016. For example: 15 - Are there handwashing stations available and properly supplied?

  • Equipment and utensilsLower risk

Equipment has to be built from cleanable materials, kept in good repair and stored properly. These findings are mostly about upkeep, like a cracked shelf, a worn gasket or utensils stored the wrong way. They are generally lower risk but show how well the kitchen is maintained.

Recorded 2 times across 2 separate inspections, most recently on April 20, 2017. For example: 4 - Are the premises, equipment and utensils designed and maintained to ensure safe and sanitary food handling?

    • F1.2 Are proper temperature controls maintained to ensure safe storage and display of foods?
      • Observation(s): • NEW - Individual packages of dairy creamer located by the coffee machine was found to be elevated above 4°C. An internal temperature of the warmest creamer was found to be 15.9°C. Creamer was discarded. • NOTE - Dairy creamers which are not shelf stable must remain cooled at an internal temperature of 4°C or colder to mitigate harmful pathogen growth. Staff on shift to rotate out ice packs to keep creamer at cooler temperature. Keeping less packages out on display will help with keeping creamers closer to ice packs and to easily maintain an internal temperature of 4°C.
      • F1.2B Potentially hazardous foods must be stored or displayed at a temperature of 4 °C (40 °F) or colder.
  4. Monitoring

EV chargers are not working here. So if your banking on this for a road trip, don't bother. App says "in use" but it's not working at all. Apparently Chargepoint said that these are not owned by PetroCanada and instead are owned by individuals who are responsible for maintenance. Obviously not doing it. The only working charger in Merritt is BC Hydro one unless you have a Tesla adapter.

Do not stop to charge here. One EV charger labeled as out of order. The other says the petro can app no longer works. The card reader also nonfunctional. I asked the clerk and he said use Charge point app. Nope. Twenty minutes of life I'll never get back.

We stopped at this Petro Can on Sat, Apr 11 in the morning. The guy behind the counter was absolutely arrogant, condescending, and very unfriendly. Won't stop there again! Management: This guy needs more customers service training!

Just stopped here as we had 4 children needing to use the washroom and fill the tank up. I bring the kids inside and look around and make a comment is the washrooms inside or out ? As we are not from this god for saken town and the creepy looking hair tied back attendant right away said ‘that’s what you read’ I said excuse me ? He said that’s what you read in the rudest tone I’ve ever heard. Then another customer behind us told him off for us. I feel murderer vibes from this person. I wouldn’t step foot in there and spend your money in one of the other gas stations. He also then gave my daughter the finger. Real mature.
